He is missing a chunk of his ankle.

This is never going to heal. Ever.

Karlsson referred to this as "the new normal" and proceeded to rip his groin trying to adjust and compensate for his lack of speed.

The real "new normal" is a career of constant injuries.

I'm not sure that matters to SJ. It will never be a bargain. Their window is now, that's the price of playing the UFA game.

If you refuse to sign any contract in which the end doesn't look bad, you should simply stay at home on UFA day.

Fortunately for the Sharks, they only have two NMCs - Karlsson and Vlasic. So they shouldn't end up in an expansion draft disaster.

Agreed. I'd defer to Doug Wilson's judgement here. Great GM with a long proven track record. Give me one example of a bad trade or bad contract he has signed. If he's giving him 8 years, I'll bank on him having a solid diagnosis and reason to believe that Karlsson will recover his previous form.

Thank goodness. I thought the Habs might go after him. They're already going to be stuck with an old, less mobile defenseman on a long deal. They don't need two of those guys.

The contract is pretty much buyout protected (no real savings in cash or cap the last couple years) but the structure would also make it pretty easy for him to lace it up (or move if they agree to it) during that last year if he was running on fumes. So really 7 years of liability (at a 88M price).

And another top-tier player who is overpaid. Did you guys learn nothing from The Incredibles? "And when everyone is overpaid, no one will be."

So is Pavelski leaving or taking a huge discount?

Don’t really see how the numbers work out here

I wish we had the cap space to offer Pavelski a 1 year $12M deal.

The standard contract for star players is getting absurd. I understand the money, but the term teams are willing to go is out of hand.

Do you remember these?

Eight years is nothing. The Sharks should take the Kawhi approach with Karlsson moving forward, and if he's not feeling 100% for a regular season game, he doesn't go. Protect the investment.

As hobbled as he was, he had 16 points in 19 games, and he was a catalyst during that ridiculous comeback against Vegas, as well as the setup man on the OT winner.

I predict two more Norris trophies during this contract for #65.

Exactly this. Karlsson is going to be very impactful for the length of this contract.

He will win at least one more Norris.

At one point wasn't Karlsson on for 11 of St. Louis' first 12 goals? I know he was hurt but I think his poor defensive play really got exposed coming to the west. Good for the Sharks I guess just glad Calgary was no where near this.

He couldn't move laterally because his groin was held together with scotch tape and dreams.

"Erik Karlsson is bad defensively" is a tired narrative that has been disproven more times than a 9/11 conspiracy. He can get danced. He can lose his man. So can Gio. It doesn't make either bad defensively, it's just what happens when you play against the other team's top line 25 minutes a night.
