I’ve heard homeless shelters have asked not to give money to panhandlers. I think it’s because it encourages substance abuse but maybe i’m wrong? If you want to help or donate then give directly to the mustard seed.

It's just misplaced human compassion. It's the wrong move for sure, but there's a reason they go there and do it.

They put a sad, awful situation right in the face of every day people and we're triggered to help an immediate struggling human being in front of us.
I appreciate that we have to understand it isn't the right move as a society, but I hate hate hate when people call the change givers dumb or stupid.

It's human nature to help those around us, and our empathy and compassion overcomes rational thought from time to time.

I almost never do it, but once I did because for whatever reason (long light, change in the holder, really sad looking person).

For sure nobody should do it, but it's a little obtuse in my opinion for posters to act like they can't figure out why anyone would be so stupid. It's compassion, it's why they canvass there.

That is all.

I mean, it’s possible that his picnic basket has been upgraded to a gun and a badge. Terrifying, but possible.

So good, in fact, that Jonas says he does "extremely well" on his best days, and his worst days are "still really good."

How good?

"On a good day, I can make $400 doing this in three hours."

The key to Jonas's success? Getting away from downtown and into the city's suburbs.

Jonas's income claims don't surprise Const. Jessica Wood, who is the community resource officer for the Calgary Police Service in the downtown area.

"If it wasn't lucrative for the people who are panhandling, they wouldn't continue with the behaviour," Wood said.

"I have heard that people can make upwards of a hundred dollars an hour, so that sounds about right to me."
They make more money a day then the idiots giving them money and it's tax free!

I think there was a cop at the intersection of Edmonton Trail and Memorial Drive today. There has been the same two people there for a long time but today those two were gone and this new guy showed up. He walked down the middle lane not the sidewalk like the others. And he didn't even seem to want money, no hat or cup or sign or anything. He was just really obviously looking in people's cars. He never even made eye contact with me. I'm calling narc.

Having them wander in traffic is a bigger issue, and a big problem on its own.

The problem is, as btimbit pointed out, there's precious little that can actually be done about it that is an effective deterrent. Police go and move the person on? Person (or another one) comes back. Police give a fine? If person can pay, they generally won't anyhow. Police 'sit' at one intersection that is popular with them? They go to another. Police probably get over 100 calls a day about people panhandling in and around various places (especially intersections) but there is, honestly, precious little that they can effectively DO about it.

Man, it almost sounds just like speeding...oh wait...

I realize you are being tongue in cheek, but I will point out that, despite what it looks like on this board, I deal with way, WAY more speeding complaints than I ever have about panhandlers. Squeaky wheel, and all that...

Well, they are most likely panhandling to feed a substance abuse issue. In that case, they will find the money some way or another. I don't think that possibility decides the issue one way or another, but it certainly complicates it, yes?

Like, the Mustard Seed can't buy heroin for someone suffering from an addiction disorder.

It is really disappointing when I was simply trying to take place in a discussion only to be personally attacked and ridiculed for no reason. CP should be better than that. I will stay away from discussions like this as I did before.
