And yet last month the Sens beat the Jets twice, almost took the Flames to OT, and last week beat the Blues and Leafs. This just proves that you can't take any team in the NHL lightly. I really don't want to see another nail biter against the worst team in the league

I dunno but I strongly, strongly dislike the idea of playing defensive defensemen on their off side. You lose the ability to clear the puck up the boards on your forehand. Having to clear the zone on your backhand almost every time is a big disadvantage.
Only swift skating puck movers like Brodie or Kylington should play the off side. Instead of trying to backhand the puck up the boards and out of the zone they can make a deke, beat the first forechecker and start the breakout.

The depth is as follows
Giordano
Hanifin
Valimaki
Kylington
and Brodie can play LD in a pinch too.
Don’t see any room for Fantenberg next year at all. There are 4 guys who will clearly be ahead of him long term.
And why would Fantenberg sign here when he can sign somewhere that has crap depth and he’ll be pencilled into the top 6? Heck he could probably play top 4 on the Oilers right now. Does anyone think he’s really be itching to sign here as a #8/9 guy? I don’t.
There isn’t really a good fit for Fantenberg here past this playoff run IMO from his perspective or the Flames perspective
|
I wonder if they're actually more impressed than they expected to be though. You're right he can sign anywhere, but Calgary does have a large Swed contingent, and playoff success can make you love the brand over night.
Maybe they deal Brodie and Kylington this summer and sign Fantenberg to be the 6/7 guy.

^ Agreed. Let's not forget the Flames may also need to
A) shed some salary this off season
B) have trade chips if they want to look at upgrading / adding in net

Flames rarely win on my birthday, its like a curse or something.
I'll still say 33-0 Flames though.
Come on boys.

Personally, I feel very calm when Fantenberg is on the ice. He is very solid and I understand why the coaches like him. If I was a coach, I would love a player who helped the team reduce mistakes.
|
Even with their 2-1 loss at Winnipeg, Flames are averaging 5 goals per game in their last 5 games. I could see adding Kylington if they needed some more offence but I'd rather give Fantenberg the reps at this point, especially if you think play will tighten up come playoffs.
Kylington's development is right on track IMO.

When you're in the league this long and you're not getting anything done. Your summer starts early, its not fun. This is a team that wants to get something done, determined team and we're ready to show it.

I feel like this could be a subtle jab at the Oilers haha.

I mean it’s possible. Trading Brodie doesn’t have much effect on our LD depth though. Trading Kylington would open up a spot for Fantenberg but from some of the things said I think the Flames are higher on Kylington than his trade value is at right now.

Yeah - its a small sample size but Flames GA/G when Fantenberg plays is 2.38, and the entire season average is 2.79.
Only 8 game sample but I think he's helped stabalize and tighten things up.

Flames can't send any of their D-men down to Stockton. Link
"Rasmus Andersson and Oliver Kylington weren’t on the opening night roster, but Andersson’s been in the NHL since two days into the season and Kylington since the end of November, so they’re both considered full-timers now. While both are waiver exempt, neither was sent to the AHL on deadline day to maintain their AHL eligibility so they cannot be sent down."

It's on TSN5 and SNW which will be blacked out in Victoria unless the bar has GameCenter, which is highly unlikely.

I think Kylingtons actual play was a big part in determining who has played since the arrival of Fantenberg. OK was struggling at times even with sheltered minutes and situations. Likely both guys gets games in the last few here to determine who starts in the post season but my guess is OF gets the nod to start.
Then again there is Valimaki who will need some time as well. Crazy deep on D.

I was confused by the addition of another LD in Fantenburg, but agree that he's looked really solid. So my assumption is that Tre is thinking the D next year looks like:
Geo Andersson
Hanifin Hamonic
Valimaki Stone
Fantenburg
And that leaves Brodie and Kylington as trade bait for ... ? I dunno.

Pretty sure thats 100% wrong. They can send anyone they want down but they won't be eligible for the AHL playoffs because they were not on the roster after the deadline.
Edit
I definetly think they are interpreting the CBA wrong .

If we keep Fantenberg I hope it's not at the expense of a guy like Kylington. Next season I'd like...
Gio-Andersson
Hanifin-Hamonic
Valimaki-Kylington
Fantenberg
....as our top 7. Maybe re-sign Prout and stash him in the minors. I know thats alot of LHed shots with minimal RHed options but I'm keeping Kylington over Stone and Prout all day, every day.
Brodie and Stone are the 2 guys we should be trying to offload.

Has Kylington played the right side in the AHL?
If so that works, if not then you have Giordano, Hanifin and Valimaki ahead of him and really no home on the roster.

Sens caught us playing to their level last time. Step on them early and don't let Go till they are on the plane and out of town.
