Murdoch was a great defensive guy. And Reg was so good he was given the assignment, out of all the d-men available, to check Jagr at the World Cup.

Not as physiclal as McCrimmon and needs auxiliary help. And as the previous poster just mentioned, need another guy like Reg.
I have a lot of faith in this current version of the Flames..have to hope Bennett really steps up and Neal if he is ready for the playoffs.
Anyhow, this thread is about where Gio fits in overall. I said earlier second best defenseman and then after that, either top 15 or top 20.

[*]Kiprusoff - IMO, even more than Iggy, was responible for team success in the 2000s
[*]Fleury - face of the franchise between the Cup and Iggy. I think he wins all kinds of personal awards absent his personal demons[*]Nieuwendyk - won a cup, hugely underrated talent
[*]Giordano - maybe the best team guy and his backgrounds makes him even more special
[*]McDonald - I have to admit I'm an outlier when it comes to Lanny - I was never a huge fan like others
[*]Vernon - his personality gets in the way of me liking him more
[*]Regher - another underrated guy. I think he ranks among the best pure defensive defencemen ever
[*]Nilsson - he, Fleury and Gaudreau may be the most gifted guys in Flame history
[*]Gaudreau - I think he was the one who sort of brought the Flames back into NHL attention. I can't recall a rookie, including Iginla and Newy, making a bigger public impact (Fleury might have if he hadn't been a late season addition).

I agree. I too have never regarded Lanny as highly as others.

Gio has yet to win a single playoff game, but his regular season performance especially this year is incredible. He is having a career year at age 35, one would think his window is closing fast to be a big contributor. He probably has this year and maybe one more year as a top pairing defenseman. He knows his time is now, which makes this season all the more exciting.
He is definitely a top 5 defenseman to ever play for Calgary as it stands now, and this is the second time he has been considered for the Norris, and we all know if he stayed healthy the first time, he probably would have won it. The race this season is tight, and Brent Burns is looking like the front runner, but if Calgary finishes first place in the West, that makes Gio look really good.
If he wins a Stanley cup, he climbs up the list in a hurry as maybe the best 1 or 2 defenseman in franchise history.

Why does this keep popping up?
There's some weird misinformation floating around out there.
He's won 2 playoff games. Minimal yes. but he was won 2. Games 3 and 4 in 2007 WCQF versus Detroit. Scored a goal in one of them too.

Do the flames retire his jersey when his career is over? Personally would love to see it one day

Not without a cup. He's great, but not that great. Forever a Flame as of now.

Giordano’s jersey gets retired with or without a Cup. Enough of this “Forever a Flame” nonsense.

I can't see how. So far Iggy, Vernon and Lanny are the only ones.
I'm not a fan of the Forever a Flame, but without more accolades I don't see how Gio gets more recognition than Nieuwy and Mac.

Gio would be #4 or 5 for me. Lanny Theo and Iginla are the clubs icons. Kipper was the best goalie in team history. MacInnis and nieuwendyk were talented (as were a host of others like Nilsson) but what puts Gio above them is his continued commitment to the flames. Most of the 89 crew cold shouldered the flames for a few bucks and even later when there was a job opening nieuwy and MacInnis steered clear. Committment on and off the ice x talent. Gio is right up there for me. When he wins a Norris this year will cement it.

Also a little problematic with Lanny but his accomplishments here blow what he did in Toronto out of the water. SC champion, biggest goal in franchise history and in my opinion best season in franchise history. Plus the way he simply owned the town for a few years. And that he is from the area and settled here.
Guess I’m an old timer but he will always be Mr. Flame to me.

Al MacInnis?
Blues fans claim him just as much as we do.

I'm ok with keeping FAF. give it to Regehr and Loob in the coming years for sure, i think there are a number of others you could look at, but those two guys were exclusively great as Flames in the NHL. guys Gilmore that receive similar tributes elsewhere makes you less worried about if they get into the club.
Kipper I would lean towards retirement, but could see the argument for FAF in that he has all but abandoned Calgary since leaving hockey. retirement as a higher honour should come with some commitments. Mike and Lanny were there today, i do not believe Al and Joe were.
Gio i would put firmly in the FAF column. a cup could get him close to retirement, depending on how his career ends and what he does with himself after. i
Johnny and Monny with their current long term contracts are probably already showing FAF credentials. if they play into their mid 30s here...
Theo's an difficult one because it should be retirement. but......... enough said.

If Gio hits 1,000 games played as a Flame and doesn't get his number retired, it'll be beyond ridiculous.
For all we know he'll play until he's 40 and surpass Iggy in GP. (Which would mean we've only seen two thirds of his career at this point.)
Just speaking personally, he's one of my all-time favourites, and my favorite Flames captain. (Which isn't a poke at Iggy.)

Yep. Tough one, as he won Conn Smythe here vs. Norris there. He did play more games with the Flames so I think it tips him towards Flame. But he received more recognition as an all around defenseman with the Blues.
Certainly an all time great but when I think all time Flames, he doesn’t pop to the front for me. So I’m OK with #2 not being retired.

Where does Mark Giordano rank among all-time Flames?

And the Pearson, which is now the Lindsay. And yours truly would argue it’s more prestigious since it’s voted on by the players and not people like Mark Spector.
