I feel the Flames, Jets, and Preds are all zeroed in on either Stone or Hayes. I think those 2 players go to one of those 3 teams (not the same team). If the Flames are the team that ends up empty handed there I think the team shifts to depth moves and ends up doing very little.

I wanted to stand pat originally, however the more I think about it, the more I want to pick up Stone, Kreider, or Hayes. In that order. Picking up one of those three would bolster our scoring, and make us even more of a thread in the playoffs. I really, really want Stone now.

I think making a major trade in order to go for the SC carries a number of high risks:

1. upsetting the chemistry by acquiring a player that doesn't fit in.

2. putting the cap situation out of whack.

3. sacrificing the future by trading our prospects or picks.

I'm saying this because I think we presently have everything in place that almost guarantees that we will have a good team for a long period of time if we continue on our present path. I think this is particularly important for the Flames, as we are going to need to fill the stands for the next number of years in order to finance a new stadium.

Those concerns are valid but what keeps me on board is the age of all the key players. Other than Gio and Backlund, it's like a college campus.

Lots of future with this core.

As much as Stone would be a great add for playoff run.
The cap space math just does not add up for me to make it all work unless we are giving up an unexpected core piece in this deal for Stone which reduces the net gain for the franchise going forward.

A depth forward with top 6 potential makes more sense.

83 million estimated cap space 2019-20 season.

66.1 million currently committed to that takes into account no Smith contract next year. So 16.9m to work with. (capfriendly.com)

Lets say we are able to move Frolik and Brodie for picks/prospects. That adds another 8.95m to cap space.

That leaves us with 25.85m to work with. Even with BT wizardry we still have to pay:
Stone 9+m (lets say 9.3m). Open market could be 10m.
Tkachuk at least 7.5m
Bennett around 3m.
Rittich 3+m (lets say 3.2m).

That leaves around 2.85m to sign backup goalie, 2-3 depth forwards and 2 Dmen and cover performance bonuses from Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington and maybe even Dube or Parsons?

Simply not enough even at near league minimums for some of these roster spots.

A 3-5m/yr UFA is possible to fit in.

Maybe it's bad memories of Flames teams past that did nothing with home-ice advantage in the playoffs, or maybe it's the goaltending, or maybe it's the newness of being a top-5 team, but I'm hoping for prudence. Everything the brass has said points toward caution, for whatever their public statements are worth.

I'd like to see some more physicality in the ranks (not a goon), although it's hard to say who a player like that would displace. Adding that may have to wait until the offseason, same as goaltending apparently will.

This team has no D prospects unless you count Valimaki, and that's a major concern. They also have no elite forward draftees. They have no 2nd-rounder this year due to the Hamonic trade.

Mark Stone's probably the only guy available worth moving a first for, and keeping him would have significant cap implications. He's so good, though, that you worry about the cap later and get him now if it doesn't rip apart the rest of the roster. Outside of him, just adding a bit of sandpaper would be fine.

Depth forward for a secondary asset. Hopefully someone who turns it up a notch come playoff time. A little truculence wouldn't hurt.

I'm fine with a depth acquisition where we don't give up significant assets but everything else I'm against.

We're going to need all our young dman throughout the window, and having players like Dube or, fingers crossed, our 2019 first rounder to plug in at an ELC will be CRITICAL to sustained success. We're just seeing the first year of potential here. Nothing's for sure but I really think we need to see what we have, in everyone. That includes how our key guys perform into the playoffs to truly understand and evaluate how the team responds in all situations, and we should have those data points before making any major moves that could shrink the window. Save the all in chip push for three years from now if the team loses in the conference final every year or something like that.

I am on the fence between stand pat and depth forward/minor asset. Voted stand pat. Let prices drop and see what we can get with minor asset(s)

I am fine with standing pat. Not sure why Steinberg says fans are unhappy on Social Media. Vocal minority I guess

Yep, same with CP.

A couple posters losing their minds and saying we failed and Treliving was pathetic, etc.

Its would be interesting to have another poll to see a representation of how fans feel about the result.
