This was my immediate thought. I figured I had to be missing something. Why do this now?

Whatever, who knows with the Oilers.

The good thing for Flames is Rittich is an RFA vs a UFA for Koskinen. So not directly comparable.

It is truly unbelievable. In what world is that a good deal for Edmonton? What the hell are they thinking? This guy is so unproven. 27 games gets you $13.5mil? Jesus.

Mikko Koskinen carries the seventeenth-highest cap hit among goalies in the NHL.
He will be 31-years-old at the start of this contract.
He has played 31 NHL games and won 16 in total.

My good god.

My favorite part about Oilers' reporters is that they are giant fan boys.

I always find cap friendly includes players that may not be on the roster. Here is what I think definitely applies for next year...

Forward (9): $40.769

Defense (7): $25.183 (excludes Jones)

Goalies (1): $4.5M

Buyouts (2): $1.633

Total cap (17): $72.085M

About $10M in space, and they need to sign 5 forwards and a goalie.

Uh, why would you need a NMC if you're signed in Edmonton?

$20 says he's bought out or dealt before the contract ends.

I saw "Oilers have re-signed" and got excited that Chiasson may have gotten a really stupid contract.

There's still time, Chia!

When negotiations happen with other teams and players, I feel like even players know that using Edmonton contracts for comparables is out to left field. How did they not get him for 3 million a season at the most for that term for a guy that had under .900 save % his last ten games.

This has to be Chiarelli sinking the ship and filling it with buckets of lead before he gets walked off the plank, right? It's the only explanation. And why sign him now instead of later in the year? I don't see the upside here. it's gotta be sabotage.

To be fair, Oiler’s fans are the only fans that should hate this deal.

C'mon Chia, quit now so you can go out on that high note with all your colleagues laughing at the punch line!
