You really don't know anything about a goalie until they get in front of NHL shooters, where they just play their game. And I thought Gillies did fairly well last year, in his first stint.
If we see a continuation of that, and hopefully some improvement and progression, then who gives a crap about his numbers in Stockton?
|
Also, playing behind NHL defence is significantly better than AHL...especially what we have in Stockton currently.

Am I crazy for wanting to see Gillies play against the Blues on Sunday? The dream is still for Gillies and Rittich be good enough to take over for next season isn't it?

Sometimes a goalies numbers in the AHL or below just don't properly indicate how good a goalie is, or can be, in the NHL. Look at Patrick Roy. Attrocious numbers in the QMJHL, but he made the jump right into the NHL and he was immediately very good.
Another goalie who some may think did okay in the NHL is Martin Brodeur. Played one year in the AHL and his numbers certainly did not indicate what he would become in the NHL. Some guys with better numbers than him that year in the AHL were Corey Hirsch, Allan Bester and Jamie McLennan.
I don't think Gillies will be on the level of Roy or Brodeur, I'm just saying just because his numbers don't look good in the AHL doesn't mean that they'll get worse in the NHL.

With all the call ups Flames are were pretty close to the salary cap, in fact sending someone down is the only way they could fit Gillies on the roster without using LTIR.

Whats wrong with using LTIR space?

^ If you put Smith on LTIR he has to stay on for a week I beleive. So this would indicate that his injury not too serious (hopefully).
Edit: too bad Lomberg won't get to play against Minnesota though after all.

gillies has done nothing since he came out of college to make me think that he would be an improvement over smith, unfortunately. i am hoping that smith out with a non-serious injury finally forces the coaching staff to give the net to rittich, like what happened to kipper after turek went down, and rittich rises to the occasion and never looks back.
in the meantime, smith gets time to work on his game and takes the rest days he obviously needs so he can perform like he had been the past 5-6 games whenever they need him as a backup

They don't have to put Smith on LTIR though, Stone could be placed on LTIR to get them cap space.
They could have recalled Gillies on an emergency basis without putting Smith on IR because they wouldn't have 2 goalies to dress tomorrow otherwise.

I have a sneaking suspicion that whatever injury or ailment he's suffering from happened the game against the Pred's when he took that shot to the face that stripped his mask. He seemed a little dazed then, not as fiery as his natural self.

They haven't needed the cap space yet. There's no benefit to putting a player on LTIR until you need to go over the cap to make a recall.

So, you are speculating that Smith suffered a head injury on Saturday and finished the game, then continued to feel the effects for three more days before starting again and playing 40 mins on Wednesday? I don't buy it.

Would like to see Gillies get a shot just to see what's there but I doubt it happens. Hope Rittich has a good weekend here.

I think he's been dealing with something for a while, most likely groin related.
He's looked like he hurt or tweaked something multiple times this year but refuses to take a seat.
He must have known something was wrong before the Weise goal, which was btw the worst goalie play I've seen in my life, why did he stay in the net?
This is sabotaging team success and it kind of pisses me off.

We still won, so at worst it’s a failed sabotage.

Hope Gillies plays Sunday and gets a shutout and allows the Flames to run with him and Rittich for a stretch to see what we may have with that tandem if anything.
We're reaching a turning point in the organization and need to know if our young drafted goalies can be starters or we'll constantly be recycling older goalies and paying them more than needed.

Well then Sir, you are completely unqualified to work for the Fan960.
You might have a chance if you brush up on double standard cherry picking opinions like Ryan Pinder, who this fall conveniently has enjoyed denigrating Flames goalies for not having elite AHL numbers buuut... he found it within his analytic genius to NOT trust Garrett Sparks excellent AHL numbers last year with the Marlies because of the strength of the team he was playing behind...
Weird how that works. Funny that I quit listening after Kerr left.

It was damn close to a successful one, if not for the purple drink gang.

There is not a single NHL goalie who would pull himself from a game unless he was physically unable to play. Goalies are going to play in daily discomfort all year, so I suspect that if Smith has been nursing something it has not significantly affected him enough to know as much as you think he should.

These sorts of speculation-based shots at a player's character are ridiculous, embarrassing, and really need to stop. Mike Smith is a seasoned professional. He is popular with his teammates and his coaches, who I am quite sure would not put up with any form of sabotage.
