No where even close to accepting that assumption. RFA years are worth almost half of UFA years at this point. Hence why all 8 year second contracts look so much more expensive then 6 year second contracts.

Right, forgot he played less than half of his first season. So it's about $6.75M X 5 + $7.75M X 1. The equivalent for Tkachuk would be $7.25M X 8, if it could be agreed that they were comparable. But then there's the cap inflation, too. $7.5M X 8 would still be good.

Sounds sketchy... like it was planned.

Neither of these points are correct.
The CAP for this year is inflated because it is pro-rated. But Nylander doesn't actually receive the money that it implies.
Nylander's total compensation on this deal is $41.77M (not $45M). And the cap hit for every year after this year is correctly set at $6.96M.
there is no secret savings here, and the Leafs haven't pulled a fast one. It's just that the money Nylander receives this year gets STATED FOR CAP PURPOSES at a higher amount, as it is pro-rated.
Total dollars, and actual cap hit for the other 5 years jive, and are fair.

I’m confused. Why does Draisaitl make $8.5M per season then?

Except these contracts would have paid Nylander $45M, and the current contract pays him $41.77M

One thing that was confirmed through all this, and it is was how bad Draisaitl's second contract is.

Might also have something to do with the quality of the players signing said contracts. Players signing eight year second contracts have been, for the most part, current or future franchise players (Draisaitl aside, but E=NG).

No, $41.77M
He only plays 56 games this year, but the money is the money.

I think his salary is prorated but not any bonus.

Total compensation (cash)
Year 1: $6.77 + 2
Year 2: $0.7 + 8.3
Year 3: $2.5 + $3.5
Year 4: $2.5 + $3.5
Year 5: $2.5 + $3.5
Year 6: $2.5 + $3.5
Total: $41.77M / 6 = $6.96M
Edit: corrected year 2

Yes, the first year salary is pro-rated, and he actually receives $6.77M instead of the implied $10M. But the cap hit has to show the total, which is why it is higher this year.
But he only receives $6.77M, and $41.77M in total.

Right. I thought the suggestion was that he got his full salary this year. I misunderstood.

What's interesting about this is that once the signing bonus is paid for $8.3m, his cash cost comes down considerably, which increases his trade value

Yeah, trade for him in year two and you pay almost league minimum salary that year. I don't quite understand how and when the signing bonuses are paid each year though. It seems counterintuitive for "signing" bonuses to be paid years after signing.

Good call. On July 2nd 2019, this contract becomes substantially more attractive in trade.

Doing the math on this...
Nylander receives $17.1M between now and July 1st.
Then he costs (in actual dollars) $24.7M over 5 seasons (though the cap hit will still be $6.96M)
For some teams - many teams - that is an attractive situation. You have to tip your hat to Dubas for that fact.
