Andrew Nielsen stats and contract status.

65th overall in 2015.

Don’t know much about Nielsen, but with the injuries on the backend we definitely could use some depth and he seems intriguing enough. Interesting to see how he does.

Always liked Klimchuk. Hoped he eventually could make the jump, but just never could and with the added depth up front this season he wasn’t getting a chance anytime soon. Stats wise he seemed to be struggling down in Stockton this season too. All the best to him.

Both guys likely top out as AHLers. Calgary needed d depth down there.

Sad to see Klimchuk go though. Fantastic guy from an awesome family. Hope he does well in Toronto!

So, Treliving has moved on from collecting all the 2013 first round forwards and is now going to get all the 2015 mid-round defencemen.

Nielsen put up some damn impressive numbers for a big guy for a while. I think he's got a better shot than Klimchuk of making it. Hopefully this isn't another Granlund trade though.

Morgan Klimchuk. He has such a hockey player's name. I remember seeing him play with, I think it was Nathan MacKinnon at the IIHC in spring of '15. The guy seemed to have a lethal shot. Maybe MacKinnon made him look better than he is.

It's odd to see a guy with skill and work ethic not amount to much. He wouldn't be the first youngster to have a career derailed by injuries, though.

This seems to make a lot of sense.

- Stone is injured, possibly long term.
- Valimaki is now missing a few weeks
- Kylington will be an every night guy until one of Stone/Valimaki get healthy
- Nielsen steps into a now depleted AHL defensive group

Seems like a smart move by Tree, especially when you look at how Klimchuk has been passed on the depth chart by other players in the AHL.

Does anyone know if he can play RD too? If he can play both sides that would give him a better chance of ever cracking our roster in the future (as a 6th/7th man)

This was actually why I was in favour of letting Iginla ride it out with the Flames. I would have rather seen him ride off into the sunset at the end of the season than get a weak return.
If I recall he was projected as a mid to late 2nd rounder. From what I heard he interviewed very well an had leadership intangibles they were looking for which is why they liked him. At the end of the day both Klimchuk and Poirier were picked ahead of where they were projected but I'm not sure it would have mattered at the time as when you look at the other players picked in the late 1st round Shea Theodore looks like the only really good one. I don't blame Feaster as I believe he was letting the scouts make those picks although it remains to be seen how much influence Weisbrod may have had.

Not much else the Flames could've done with those 22nd & 28th 2013 picks...

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl2013e.html

In hindsight, Calgary should've asked for one decent prospect for each of Iginla and Bouwmeester, instead of two B prospects + 1st rounders.

Yeah, you would now rather have Ryan Hartman over Klimchuk, or maybe decided to elevate Fucale in your thinking, but really Klimchuk was an OK pick there. I could see going with Petan as well.

“He was really excited. He told me, ‘This is like a dream come true,’ ” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving after a chat with Nielsen. “Growing up, he said the Flames were his team and he dreamed of one day playing at the Saddledome.”
Quote:
“Not a lot of guys come in and have those type of statistics in their first year in the American League,” Treliving said. “As you’ve heard me say, not everybody develops at the same rate. So I think he took a big step in his 20-year-old year to jump on the scene … We have some reasons why we think he maybe took a step back. We have to get to know the kid a bit more. We’ve done a lot of homework on him, but he probably hasn’t taken as many steps forward as he was hoping and anticipating.

“But I like the attributes of his size. I like the attributes of his range. I like his shot. He’s shown an ability to create offence at the American League level. So now, he has to dig in here and we have to push him to take those steps forward.”

Draft picks are lottery tickets and seem to always be worth more before it is used.

Somewhat related but I expect Prout to be recalled from his conditioning stint to sit tonight or do they just keep Nielson around and let him watch?
