I'm willing to bet that Neal is going through the same funk Hamilton went through when he first got here. I'm sure he will pull it all together soon.

Read on HF thst when neal first came to penguins he had 1 goal in 1st 20 goals. Crazy is true.

On flip side surprised to see brouwer with 6 goals in 20 goals, near pace to tie his record best season for goals.

From the replays I saw, to me it looked like when he got hit it, it looked like knee on knee. Probably explains why the Flames went after the Vegas player after the whistle.

To me, the James Neal struggles boil down to a playmaking centerman. And the fact the flames don’t have one on the roster.

Aside from goaltending (hopefully Rittich can sustain some level of this play) I think an upgrade at the Center position is the biggest priority if this team is to move to contender status.

In Pittsburgh he played with Malkin. Crosby played with Kunitz and Dupuis.

In Nashville I believe their top line in the SCF year was Forsberg - Johansen - Neal. Also saw some Arvidsson - Johansen - Neal and Jarnkrok - Johansen - Neal

Before that, some lines included:

Forsberg - Ribeiro - Neal
Forsberg - Fisher - Neal
Jarnkrok - Wilson - Neal

In Vegas he played most often on Perron-Haula-Neal

Had a look back at Neal's last three seasons. He's had a lot of time with second tier players, not a lot of time with top tier players.

Most frequency was the Perron/Haula combination last year. Second is Colin Wilson and Jarnkrok ... so his linemates this season probably seem somewhat familiar to him. He did spend some time Johansson and Forsberg and Johansson and Arvidsson in Nashville though.

His best combinations for expected GF%

At this point, unless we are planning on acquiring someone for Neal to play with, I think we are better off moving him. With the current roster he doesn't fit in.

I'm sure we could move him to Pitt.

So does that mean we need to throw xGF% out the window?

When he is on a line with guys in the top 20 of the NHL in points they aren’t expected to outscore the opposition?

I think with Neal to get him started here I would love it if they tried Bennett at center again and slid Backlund down to help out younger guys like Dube, and Janko with guys like Ryan and Frolik playing right wing. There is no world right now where it makes sense to split up that top line but there is a world IMO where it makes sense to try Bennett at center:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Bennett - Neal
Dube - Backlund - Ryan
Czarnik - Jankowski - Frolik
Hathaway

For whatever reason neither of Calgary's top two duos out chance the opposition when Neal in on their flank.

When he's with Bennett they out play the opposition but don't finish.

I wouldn't call the stat wonky as I think it's just a summation of the different degrees of chances both ways. Certainly passes the eye test too as can't remember too many good shifts with Monahan and Gaudreau.

I mean I made the post when it was announced he was the extra at practice but yeah I could totally understand a Neal scratch, that selfish penalty at such a crucial point in the game, plus the lack of production so far.

I don't think it would actually hurt at this point to sit and think for a game, although I'm also fine with him playing and working through it. He has shown some flashes of better play as of late.

Ya move a guy 20 games after signing a 5 year contract.

Great message to send to any free agents thinking of signing here.

Wouldn't Pittsburgh have signed him if they wanted him? Or do they have an iffy contract they are looking to exchange.

I would love to see these 2 lines given a try:

Johnny/Monahan/Tkachuk

Bennett/Lindholm/Neal
