No big reason really. I am not saying that Monahan wouldn't be a decent choice.
I don't think the captaincy is going to change any time soon. Gio is still signed for 4 more seasons and anything can happen in that time. The team may even be unrecognizable by then (Monahan will be eligible to be a UFA before Hanifin's contract is up). I project that Hanifin will be a top pairing defenseman by then, and if so, could lead the team in ice time.
Hanifin is an honest and hard working player and if his career proceeds like many thought he would when he was drafted, he should be captain material by 2022. He seems extremely professional.
I like Monahan, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded before his NTC clause kicks in and the Flames have to pay him a $3.5 million bonus, if the Flames fail to build a cup contender by then.
