This would have been a decent hire for the Hall:Hopkins rebuild... but last time I checked Hitch isn’t a scout either way.
Their problems are in the collection of talent not in the composition.

I am friends with someone who played on the Blues under Hitchcock. He said he was horrible / pat his prime as a coach. I hope this is true and that it continues into Edmonton.

Hitch is one of my favorite coaches but he has a schtick. He works best with talented teams that are lazy and he has a short shelf life - 3-5 years max before over priced babies start tuning him out.
To me the Oilers have some promise if things go their way but the goaltending, secondary scoring, and defence are all weak. I think Hitch's #1 goal should be to get something out of Lucic, either hitting or something. Perhaps Lucic has turned into Phaneuf after he got paid and if so then pay some team to take him off your hands or send him to the minors.
I dont know how any coach can make up for bad contracts, bad trades, and bad goaltending. I am surprised the TO media isnt all over Edmonton for overpaying Leon as that is the direct cause of this Nylander mess.

The Oilers are three points back of third place Vancouver with three games in hand. Given how awful this division is, a short term bump could be enough to squeak in.
Though, assuming Calgary and San Jose manage to stay in two of those three divisional slots, Edmonton would have to finish ahead of Anaheim to get the third. And that is going to be a challenge for them.
