No - if he leaves NYI he will sign McDavid like money in Toronto.

Not saying he would come here but the Leafs can't make that kinda offer IMO. They have players about to be paid. Calgary has their top players on really good contracts.
Its not an advantage though when you are giving the extra money to the likes of Brouwer/Stajan

Not gonna happen because Matthews will be making McDavid money. They also have to pay Nylander and Marner soon too.

Win now.
Would address the alleged culture of mediocrity as well.

Calgary actively trying to sign Tavares will be about the same as Calgary actively trying to win the Amazon bid.

Yeah I agree the off-season plan can hinge on JT because it is a long shot at best. Sure take a swing but that better not be the only plan.

We'll you can't predict the future, so why try? The question was what should Calgary do, and I think if they don't make a pitch for the top FA they are being negligent.
Every time Tavares is brought up here there is a chorus of posts about how it wont happen. Well it won't if BT doesn't make a pitch.

Obviously.
There are fair questions being asked about Flames management but they are not incompetent idiots.

They gotta trade for or sign a high end forward player - either center or winger. Whether Tavares or someone else.

Conditions on Smith pick, via Flames:
-If they make 2018 playoffs, 2019 second to Arizona (and their 2020 second goes to Islanders)
-If they miss 2018 playoffs, 2018 third to Arizona (and their 2019 second goes to Islanders)

They should be telling Hamonic to start whispering to Tavares about how great Calgary could be if he went there. I thought I read somewhere that they were close friends. Do everything you can to get his attention and then trade for his rights at the draft to show him how serious they are about him.
Plan 2 should be targeting some other elite player. Look at Tampa, they have a lot of awesome players, not 2 way players, not grinders or truculent guys. Skill wins in today's NHL. There is the rare exception to the rule, Ferland might be one but there really should only be 2 or maybe 3 guys like that on a team (forwards) the back end should be tough but still mobile with 1 or 2 more tough less mobile guys. And as great as it is to have really nice people on the team with great character, it doesn't win games. I'd rather have a team full of Aholes who win than a nice team that's constantly mediocre.
Just fix things.

They are stuck in the netherworld of middle of the pack - especially without any possibility of a high pick this year. I’m for a huge, swing for the fences signing and/or blockbuster trade.
Something like:
Karlsson, Hoffman (or Stone)
for
Hamilton, Hamonic, Fox, Bennett (or Frolik), +?
Gaudreau-Monahan-Tkachuk
Hoffman-Jankowski-Ferland
Dube-Backlund-Frolik (Bennett)
Who cares
Gio-Brodie
Valimaki-Karlsson
Kulak-Andersson
Or
Try to sign Tavares for huge money. And flip Jankowski, Brodie, Stone for picks to drop salary.
Tkachuk-Tavares-Ferland
Gaudreau-Monahan-Bennett
Dube-Backlund-Frolik
Who cares
Gio-Hamilton
Valimaki-Hamonic
Kulak-Andersson

I don't see the team making any big deals or trades to be quite honest.
They may go out and find a new backup goalie and a couple 3rd/4th liners but I don't see any homeruns.
The only big change will be the release of the coaching staff.

What would it take to get a first round pick in the lottery?
Does Bennett + Brodie get it done?

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
1) They'd have to make a deal prior to the draft lottery selection, which is near the end of April. That's a tough ask.
2) Would you trade the 1st overall for Brodie & Bennett? Probably not and thats the risk any of those teams would be taking.

And is this really the year to be trading into a high lottery pick? I honestly don't know the strength of the top 5 in this years draft, compared to the hype around McDavid/Eichel or Matthews/Laine/PullRV, or even Tyler v. Taylor. It doesn't seem like the really deep 2014 or 2013 drafts (but maybe that's just my ignorance). It's more like last year's draft, where only two of the first round are playing significant NHL minutes and, while having decent rookie seasons, aren't household names.

I would to Bennett and Brodie for an opportunity to draft Brady Tkachuk.. if there were a willing trade partner.

I'm not sure Brady will live up to his draft position.
