Poor coaching and too slow.
I have been a fan of this team for the last 25 years and in all honesty this is probably on of the most disappointing seasons the team has had. Of all the teams not making the playoff this year, this team has by far the least amount of picks in the next 2 years compared to any other team. This is going to hurt them in the long run. This GM has sacrificed so many pics for goaltenders and defencemen in the last 2 years that has not turned into on ice success. Very poor asset management IMO.
I can't see the current coach back next year, if this team is not in playoffs, and if the next coach can't get them in, I can easily see the GM fired.

Two words come to mind when I think of how the Flames play:
Methodical and inconsistent.
Methodical with their system that makes a great deal of sense and leads to shot generation (but allows the other team to be methodical in their defensive approach and allows for a quick counterattack), and inconsistent with their effort level/execution (who knows which it is on any given night when they are disappointed with the result).
I like the core, and this could so easily be a fast, physical and skilled team that is relentless.

We both had Stone as well. A young struggling Turris just waiting for a change of scenery to put it all together ala Bennett (Green text). Mike Smith in net standing on his head. I see it for sure. This is why I think with a different coach and more discipline we might squeeze a different result out of the same group.

The fact that this is true makes me sad. At no point as a hockey fan have I ever thought "It would be amazing if the Flames modelled themselves after the Phoenix Coyotes!". No wonder the fans are bored senseless by this uninspiring team.

I swear, they use a magic 8-ball to determine how they're going to play.

We have a few players that battle hard for the puck and a bunch that are busy making sure they're playing their position properly... robotic and safe. I believe this is why our power play is so bad.
I think the coach preaches a stay the course mentality and everyone has bought in thinking the game will turn itself around in their favour.

Even softer between the ears than they are on the ice.

D Sutter years: hard working, hard hitting puck pursuit
B Hartley years: best conditioned, wear you down, never quit
Every other year since the 1990s exodus of talent = no identity/let's just play and hope we win

This is what Gulutzan said when he was hired:
Quote:
"There will definitely be a little bit of a style change in how we play," Gulutzan said. "It will lead to an exciting game. It'll be an exciting, connected team that you're going to see here.
"What we want to be is a real connected group here. We want to be connected in fives in all three zones. We want to defend fast; we are going to defend fast. We are going to utilize the assets we have here. For me the trend is how quickly we can transition from offense to defense, how much we can stay connected so we can hold onto the puck but still play fast, and how quickly we can get it back and utilize the strengths of the players that we have here. The only way you can play that way is to stay connected as a group."

In reference to Gully's quote:
They are NOT exciting. This is one of the most boring Flames seasons, especially considering they're fighting for a playoff spot.
They don't defend fast. Their defence has way underperformed expectations.
They certainly don't utilize their assets as some of the best players have had their worst years under GG, mainly Bennett and Brodie.
Their transition game doesn't hold a candle to other teams' in the league.
According to his logic, if all the above are met then they means they are connected. I guess they're not a connected group.

In fairness, Gulutzan didn't promise to transition quickly from defence to offence. That quote reads transition from offence to defence quickly.

He's talking about transitioning from offense to defense. The transition game we're lacking is from defense to explosive offense.

I’m sure he got it mixed up as he ideally wants to transition from offense to a faceoff at center ice
And agreed, sadly the transition you mention is the one the Flames lack
