of the three teams they are currently in the drivers seat
We have different definitions of “driver’s seat”. Being up 1 or 2 points with a game in hand and 35 to play is not the driver’s seat IMO. It is a dog fight.
I'm not too surprised the Sharks are playing well. They have a great defence, a few good forwards, and above average goaltending. They are not a cup contender and may drop off next season but I fully expect them to be in the playoffs this year. That said I think they would be a great first round match up for the Flames.
I'd be happy with that matchup. Flames have always played well against the Sharks, and they've even won a few games in their barn.
I'm glad the Flames get a shot at the Kings on Wednesday. Not laying an egg in a big game at home would go a long way to proving the Flames are for real to the fans and to themselves!
The Flames currently hold a divisional playoff spot and control their own destiny. That is what being in the driver's seat means.
Basically every team in the race controls their own destiny. It is too early to declare drivers seat just yet IMO but it’s true they don’t need any “help” to get in.

With 35 games left every team is in a drivers seat. There is so much hockey to played. That why it was laughable when after 20 games some people were saying the season was over.

'Drivers seat' to me just means that you're guaranteed a playoff berth if you win out the rest of your games, no matter what your opponents do. Only 16 teams are ever in that position at any given time. However, I agree it's very early still.

That being said, I think even the Oilers, Canucks or Coyotes would be guaranteed playoffs if they won out.
Lots of hockey to be played, but I like (not love) where the Flames sit. That could change in a week.

When I said all teams, I did mean those in thick of things right now. I think that ship has sailed for the edmontons and Vancouvers of the world.

Weren't they in a playoff spot or very close at the 20 game mark?
