No, don't do it, you're too young, you have so much to live for!

But seriously, congrats on the upcoming proposal. I was in Banff in November 2016 and the Gondola wasn't that busy on a Thursday afternoon. You can probably find a private place up the mountain to propose. It would be a pretty pictuesque place to propose.

Word of advise. Pay attention where you're putting your knee down. I put mine down on a tiny rock. I was too nervous to notice the pain at first but once I got the question out, and she said yes, I started to notice! It is now a funny moment we laugh about though.

I want to further emphasize not worrying too much about it going smoothly. I had an entire day of delays and making adjustments and it happened totally different than I had expected.

All the same to her though, so don't sweat it.

Since FOI threads are all depressing, I came back to catch up on this one. It's one of the few feel good threads we've got at the moment!

The gondola has been mentioned a few times, and I was thinking you might propose on the way up the gondola, in the gondola itself. There's enough room to get down on a knee, it's private, the views are great (I haven't done it in years, but I remember them being great), and you'll be out of the elements, which could be a factor in January. On top of the mountain it can be REALLY windy, especially in winter, so it might make a good backup plan to do it on the way up, if weather conditions look rough.

Well that's one I hadn't thought of!

If we get a private gondola that will definitely be a good option!

And glad to hear! This has been my favourite thread by a mile!

It really does sound like your best option is to carry the ring around with you, and when you see your opportunity...seize it.

Be careful where you put the ring if you’re carrying it. I felt a ringbox in my boyfriends jacket pocket the day he was going to propose(I think giving him a hug or something). I mean, I guess it could have been earrings or something else in the little jewellery box, but it seemed like a good possibility that he was carrying a ring around at that point of our relationship so I kind of anticipated what was to come.

I agree that the gondola is a good idea!! My now-husband originally planned to propose after we hiked up somewhere in Banff (forget the name of the spot) and had a nice view of the Banff Springs hotel. But when we got there it was super windy and I told him I was freezing, so we left!! Poor guy. So he revised his plan and it happened at the Banff Springs back terrace later in the day.

There's lots of good idea's in this thread, you really have to figure out what you think feels best/natural for the two of you.

My only suggestion to you is try to have someone capture the moment. My now wife looks back at my surprise proposal that I had my sister capture on film as one of the highlights of the occasion. Your GF will cherish that picture/memory forever even more and will most likely share it with all her friends/family!

Split, let me know when you two are in Edmonton for the BOA. I'll also be going to that game so we should grab a celebratory pint pregame (and hopefully many more celebratory pints after as well!).

I think it cheapens the proposal to have a photographer there. Let this happen between you guys - it's unnecessary to have somebody hiding around the corner with a telephoto lens and pretty tacky, IMO. It can't help but take some of the authenticity out of the moment - you'll be aware of the camera and it would only make sense to position yourself at a good angle for the photographer, and to try to look cool/suave/romantic/whatever. Who wants to be thinking of crap like that while proposing?

Since the guy made a thread about it, I kinda wanna see it to be honest. We should crowdfund a photographer for him.

Also, you don't need to look like anything. You get the pictures. If you don't think they capture the moment, throw them out. All you're risking is the fee for the pictures. Seems worth it to me.

After reading this thread I'm glad I proposed where I did, at the Cloud Gate in Chicago (the chrome bean). I took a picture of our reflection in the bean, holding hands with the ring visible. Turned out to be a really cool selfie before selfies were selfies.

Ohhh, that's a good point! I just decided what jacket I'll need to bring with this post!
