Putin to use legal loophole. IOC banned Russia, but said nothing about the Soviet Union.

Team Russia will be called "OAR" -- Olympic Athlete from Russia.

The 1992 men's hockey team won gold as "EUN" -- Unified Team.
So, Putin can just stick his OAR in?

Maybe, but Russia appears to be up the creek without a paddle.

@jellingworth: MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will not stop the country's athletes from competing at Pyeongchang Olympics.

How many of them will go "missing" once they come back.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but how does this affect the KHL and those players, of non-russian decent, representing their own countries (ie. can a canadian playing in the KHL be made available to the canadian olympic team)?

We don't know yet.

As of now, the KHL is still expected to shut down during the Olympics and allow their players to go to Korea. The KHL is governed by the IIHF, and IIHF rules require leagues to make players available for the Olympics (the NHL isn't under IIHF jurisdiction, which is why they can make their own rules).

If the KHL were to decide to boycott the Games, the IIHF would have to step in and figure things out.

So the NHL isnt going, the KHL is largely not going, hell, it'd be great if the rest of the leagues like Sweden, Austria, Germany, etc. decided not to release players.

Would the IIHF just disband?

Doubt it. The IOC would probably just cancel the mens hockey event.

Pretty much kills any hope I had for this tournament. Can't imagine the KHL will allow it's players to go now.

What a joke. Russia can't afford the good drugs and still uses easily testable #### from the 70s and now the whole Olympics gets downgraded. Just let them use the good drugs the Americans are using and let them go nuts.

John Shannon was on Fan960 yesterday afternoon and mentioned the possibility of the Russian Duma voting to allow the KHL to separate itself from the Russian Hockey Federation. That would allow it to terminate its relationship with the IIHF, and put it on equal footing with the NHL in this regard.

Brutal decision...the IOC and all the virtuous other countries and athletes calling for this ban will regret this as well. Sooo many other cheaters out there...banning countries is the beginning of the end for the Olympic movement.

Breaking news tonight: Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley "not certain" if the American team will go to Pyeongchang.

Huge news if true. With all the cray that's happening in the world (and in that region) I wouldn't be surprised.

That is just wacko jacko stuff. Nothing is happening in South Korea. As if North Korea will start launching scuds at Seoul during the Olympics with a huge American presence. S. Korea is one of the safest places on the planet.

I was going to mention about Russia and Putin. Russia should just invade South Korea and host the Olympics. Seems like a quick fix to me.
