When a veteran faces major surgery affecting his entire season and that veteran was formerly a PTO, this could be a career ender.
That's a major loss regardless who it is. That's affecting both on Ice and off ice atmosphere
It's gonna be a turning point in the season...for the better. Not because we are better without Versteeg on the ice, we definitely will miss him, but because it is going to galvanize the locker room going forward. Guys like Bennett and Brouwer (does he still play for us?) are gonna realize they need to fill that void and step up once and for all.
Flames only really need to watch out for 2 things:
Oliver Ekman Larsson on the PP, and the line of Domi - Dvorak - Fischer. They are really good at crashing the net, so just be brutal and physical on them when they try. And just make sure to run a tight point on OEL on the PK as he likes to use this snapshot (not even a real slapshot) that isn't hard but is laser accurate.

Losing someone for an entire season that is on your first PP Unit is a big loss.
The PP has looked lost without him
The PP was terrible with him, he never should have been on that first unit PP, constantly killing the play. My point was that losing Versteeg is a not a "big loss" to the Flames at all. A big loss would be Gaudreau, or Gio, or a player that is not very easily replaced.

Granted, it is not the top ranked powerplay, but the Flames have 10th ranked powerplay. So I'm not sure if I'd classify the PP as terrible.

I don't think that was because of Versteeg though, how many times did he muff the pass or shoot a muffin into the goalie? I don't dislike Versteeg but when you have a canon of a shot from Stone and a great puck mover in D. Hamilton I have no idea why Versteeg was used on the PP point.

I didn't say it's because of him our Powerplay looks alright.
But you said it looks terrible with him. Just not true.
Well, by far the worst game I saw last season (and potentially in a number of years) was our 5-0 loss to Phoenix. I happened to be there. I'm going tonight. It had better be a better result.

That game was the first back for the Flames after the League-mandated 5-day break. If memory serves me correctly, nearly every NHL team lost their first game back after the break last season.
