seems like it's the op and only a few people who would steal. (I got the impression from the OP he would take the money)
as I thought, the vast majority would do their best to return the wallet intact.

Yeah, it's interesting insight into the thought process of people who wouldn't do what I consider the only obvious thing, which is to take nothing from the wallet and make every effort to get it back into the hands of its owner. If you find a wallet, your new job is to get it back to the owner and nothing else matters until that's done.
What kind of POS mind do you have to possess to do anything but the right thing? I always thought guys that would steal somebody's wallet or cash in a situation like this would do so knowing that they are an absolute piece of scum, but do it anyway. To think they justify it or assume everyone else would be the same loser they are is mind blowing.

Had a lost wallet returned to me by the person who found it. Gave them the cash inside as reward (a bit less than $100).

A woman dropped $80 in cash in a store where I worked. Must have fallen out of her purse while she was paying for her books. I set the money aside, and when she came back that night in a panic I gave it to her.
The next day she came by the store with a box of donuts and muffins. I thought that was a nice gesture.

I do option B everytime without even thinking about it, as I would want others to do that should I lose mine as well.
If it's just found cash, then I just pocket it, unless I saw the person drop it. Then I'd for sure give it back to them.

I mean, in this day and age of low commodity prices and inexpensive shipping and digital payment formats who would have anything significant in their wallet worth stealing anyways?
If I lost my wallet tomorrow I might be out $20, but replacing all of the cards, and ID....its a nightmare to even think about, I wouldnt put anyone through that and hell, if it was my mistake I'd let them have whatever cash was in it as repayment for being a good Samaritan and saving me the hassle.
I'd pay a helluva lot more than $20 to not have to walk into a Registry Office, those places are an unrivaled wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Ha, was just talking to the wife's cousin about this. He said when he was in school he found a wallet dropped by a contractor that had over $4000 in it. He kept it overnight, but the next day returned the wallet. The guy, as way of reward, gave him $2!
Does not exactly inspire a 12 year old to a life of honesty lol, but his own dad bought him a new bike for doing the right thing.

This is interesting, either give a decent amount or nothing. But he did the right thing, the guy is a contractor, that money could be for groceries or his mortgage just because its cash in his wallet doesnt make it any less important.
I pay my bills with the money that I earn and expect to have, I think this is like most people. Taking a $4K loss on a trivial mistake would suck.

I found $5 in middle of a busy street I was crossing yesterday. I held it up and asked the people around me if it was theirs. No one said anything. I still have it. I was thinking about giving it to a homeless guy, but I don't think that is the best way to help the homeless. I'm going to stuff it in some charity tin at a store next time I see one. A co-worker of mine thinks I should buy a lotto ticket with it, which I think is the dumbest thing to do with it.

To be really honest, I think I will take the cash and donate half of it. Then the ID's and stuff I will rather give it to authorities or just destroy it.
I had picked up cash money ($40/$70, etc) on the hallway of my condo building a couple of times. There is no way to tell who dropped the money. It usually happened late at night and no one was walking alone the hallway. So I considered myself lucky and kept the the cash while donating half of it by stuffing it in one of those boxes in front of Timmy's counter.

I would take it upon myself to return the lost wallet with contents to its owner (if I can track them down based on what info I find inside). Maybe they even offer you some cash as a reward for doing the right thing, but if not - that's their choice.
Adult life isn't finders keepers. It doesn't belong to you. Return it and don't be a POS.

Someone picked my pocket at the bar years ago, I got an envelope in the mail a week or so later with my muddy wallet in it. It had obviously been found in the alley or something like that. Had my license, some old pictures, etc. Glad someone took the time to send it back.

It's funny because my expectations if I lose my wallet is nothing more than getting my driver's license back. My credit cards and debit cards would be immediately cancelled so they don't even matter.
And since I never carry cash it is a moot point, but if I did, I fully expect the cash to be gone.

Oh totally, my expectations if it's me that loses my wallet are beyond low.
That's why if I found one I would do everything I can to do something decent for someone else, because it's the last thing they would be expecting.
The only thing any of us have complete & total control over is how we treat one another.

I've returned a couple phones and wallet I've found, usually I find them on the train home or at the bar. If there's a way to contact the owner I will always make an effort to find them.
However, if it's just cash or some item, like sunglasses, lying around in a field I'll just grab it. I leanred a valuable lesson when I was in grade 3, I found a 20 tucked into a math textbook and notified the teacher. Some girl claimed it was hers but it was from a left over book from the year previous so there's no way it could've been. I shoul've just pocketed that bonanza find instead of someone dishonestly profiting from my honesty.

I really think answering the theoretical question and being in a situation where no one would know if you kept it or returned it would give you very different results. I think it also depends on the amount of money too. $20 bucks is no big deal but 4-500 would make more people think twice. You just have to look around, no body litters I'm sure. Who would ever do that?
