If Tanner Glass is signed here, he'll essentially play the same role as Marek Hrivik and Luke Gazdic: a decent-enough mentor for the kids while perhaps playing spot duty on minor injuries. Guys like Klimchuk, Mangiapane, and Poirier should handle the larger call-ups.

Well that's just not true.
Flames released Korpikovski from the PTO on October 9th
Stars signed him on the 10th

And it lasted for only a handful of games. I would think—given what happened with Grossman—that if anything the Flames would be more cautious now when it comes to signing PTOs to NHL contracts.
Besides, the circumstances are completely different this time around. Last year when Grossman was added to the opening night roster the Flames had three NHL calibre defense men in camp. Tanner Glass will be jockeying for a position on the bottom rung of an already crowded forward group.
I don't get why there is even a modicum if concern under these conditions.

If Glass sticks as a 14th forward, it also means next to nothing as he'll probably never get in the lineup. But, if there's a last minute injury he has enough veteran experience to not hurt his club.
I honestly doubt it'll come to this.

I guess I'm more scared that he's pretty useless and still gets signed.. I think the Grossmann thing scarred me.. It was SO obvious he was useless. Oh well hopefully a one time mishap..

Why exactly do you trust them when it comes to PTOs? This is the same team that just one year ago signed and played Grossman in multiple games, where he directly costed the team points in the standings.

I trust them more to get it right now in the light of how poorly things turned out with Grossman. The coaches clearly recognized the mistake with how quickly he was bought out; it stands to reason that they would be all the more diligent this time around.

Gazdic and Glass aren't "decent mentors" unless you mean they'll show the prospects how not to play.

Hate statements like these. How do any of us know who is or isn't a good mentor or leader?
Brian McGrattan has been lauded for his mentorship of young players, while playing and now in retirement, could any of us have predicted that?

How do you know whether they are or not? There are lots of ways young players require guidance.

I don't necessarily mean on-ice. Glass is 33 and has been around the block a few times. He was a ninth-rounder who had to fight to even make it to the NHL. While he might not be the best player, I imagine there's stuff that players could learn from that journey.

Tanner Glass was one of Alain Vingeault's inexplicable favorite players. He's trash.
Warm body for camp, I guess.

Considering how the Flames got pushed around last few years, it wouldn't hurt to have a sheriff back in the line-up.

Remember too that Grossman was a means to an end. Last year, the flames had to get as close to the cap as they could before the start of the season in order to maximize the benefit of Ladi Smid's LTIR. He should never have dressed in my opinion, but the plan was to get him to sign the contract (575K i Believe) to push the number right to the cap limit, and then was terminated once the season started. But yes, I still wake up with night terrors occasionally when I think of him playing.... it was like he had 2 left skates and a lacross stick out there.

Pretty much the exact response I was going to give--and hey: if you're going to have someone speak on your behalf, who better than TC?
(Thanks, TC! )

A friend of mine, Ryan Stone, suffered a devastating knee injury on a hit from Glass, effectively taking him out of the NHL (he was on the Flames LTIR for his final year in the league).
Totally irrational but I couldn't care less, I grew up playing with Stone and his brothers, for that sole reason I never want to see him anywhere near Flames silks. Hope he get embarrassed in camp and run out of town.
