Look at his PIMs, all those saying this is a good signing for the AHL because it's a tough league..

His PIMs are an indicator that he is not fighting and being gritty enough.

This was a terrible signing unless he finds his nastiness and starts taking liberties on some guys. But his few recent years up and down from AHL to NHL has been lacking in PIMs for a guy who plays with an edge, is a fighter or is nasty..

What does he bring that Bollig doesn't? Nothing..

A willingness to sign a two-way contract?

Lol.. well I guess there's that. But how does he make either Stockton or Calgary better or harder to play against? By being a tall warm body? C'mon..

In the minority but I like it. He is one of the tougher pure fighters left. Gotta have a guy like this in the organization in the event someone like Nurse pulls another Ference. I could see him staying in the org for a few years as there really are no other guys like that in the system.

Pretty sure if given the chance, Hunter Smith could absolutely destroy 99% of the players in the league.

Unless he's improved dramatically since I last saw him fight, Hunter Smith is not a good fighter at all.

That Doetzel guy handled Smith pretty well in Penticton last year. He ended up getting a deal with the Heat too.

Go back and watch that fight again. Nurse does not "destroy" Smith. At best, Nurse tied that fight.

Yeah, he's awful.

HockeyFights.com has video of most of his AHL fights and he doesn't look good in most of them.

Smith won that fight. He just got cut from his visor IIRC.

Yeah just echoing but Smith is not a strong fighter against heavyweights. Kanzig was just ok too he has taken a couple bad kos from what I remember. Size doesn't always equal toughness. Gotta have a guy like this to call up.

I always think of Nurse beating down Polak for no reason and SJ calling up Haley to tune him. You can bet he learned a lesson from that and won't pull the same thing on orgs with a real good fighter.

Exactly. You don't WANT someone like Gazdic to fight all the time and rack up the PIMs. You want him to do his job when he needs to.

Also, with respect to Smith, he is not a pure fighter. He fights, and he is reasonably good at it, but agree with it or not the Flames drafted him to be a player with toughness. He even played PK on his junior team. Hoping the kid takes a big step this season as I think (by the looks of it) that he will get additional responsibilities, so here's hoping. I think he is great around the net, and if you watch him, he does do some really good things on the ice. He really does need to take a step this season, however. A long-shot prospect to be sure, but one that could be useful if he ever does make it.

This is actually one of the better fights Smith has had. Pretty even except for getting cut by his visor.

This is his latest fight in March. Like many of his fights, he finishes it on his back.

I can see him being in the lineup for a few games, he and Lucic had an epic fight back in 2013.
