A shame. Would have been nice to give him a chance to turn his career around. Got to feel bad for this kid, his confidence is probably mush by now.

I guess they felt they didn't want to impede any other defencemen's development by making room for him... Maybe he signs a 2-way deal with us on July 1st?

This.

Dick move on the part of the Hurricanes.

As long as the money didn't interfere with anything else we were trying to do in free agency, should've just given him a chance, with the option to do this later if needed.

I assume just Treliving's way of saying we didn't want him but had to take as part of trade.

I don't understand how a buyout can be a condition of a trade?

Gotta feel for Murphy. If his confidence wasn't shot before it must be now

Exactly. This appears to have been a clever way for Treliving to get some of Lack's cost off the books.

By getting retention on Lack, and spending the money to buy out Murphy, the Flames end up spending something like $2M (still less than Lack's salary), but get Lack for a cap hit of $1.375M.

Flames get a lower cap hit. Canes save actual dollars. Everyone is happy.

Steinberg later clarified. Canes wanted Murphy in the trade. Flames really didn't want him so they agreed to buy him out

Why is this on the Hurricanes? It would be inappropriate to tell him something in case Treliving changes his mind and decides to keep him. They traded him to us so it's up to us what we do with him. Shouldn't it be on Treliving to personally call him and inform him of their plans?

Exactly. Absolutely not Hurricanes job to tell him about Flames intentions.

Wow... what happened to this kid? 12th overall and a highly-touted offensive prospect. Now a buyout. Ouchies.

Maybe he knew he was getting bought out so his tweet is referencing the beginning of his career "Glee" to the disappointment that his hockey career turned into "American Horror Story".

The last thing the Flames needed was a "reclamation project".

As someone else said, was really a fan in his draft year but looks like he didn't pan out.

What is most shocking to me is how bad he must be at hockey to be a trade and dump. Anton Babchuk but worse?

Anton Babchuk is Scott Stevens next to Ryan Murphy.

You've also just reminded me Jay Feaster signed him to a TWO YEAR $5M EXTENSION!!!! DA ACTUAL FUQ

He must really suck. It's too bad because as a righty I would think he could've helped the Flames RD depth.

No room in Flames depth/farm.
This gives him a chance at least, however small that may be.

I was going more down the road of 1st round picks that didn't really work out.

I was hopeful Babchuk would work out better than he did and was wrong. Same same with Murphy.

This is why I have a day job and don't work in the front office.

This is a minor thing to most outside hockey fans, but is telling of a few things:

1. Murphy is not NHL or AHL calibre.
2. The Canes are hurting for cash.
3. The Canes had it with Lack but the Flames see something in him.

This is a small deal to most fans, but it just goes to show nickle and diming is still very much happening... makes you wonder about Carolina's time in the league.

Has Peter Karmanous resolved his lawsuit with his children yet? Hurricanes may need to be self sustaining for the next couple of years.

Was really hoping that the Cane's were gonna give a Sergei Fedorov level offer sheet to Draisatl.

Too bad about Murphy, but reclamation projects are difficult propositions on teams that are going for it. If the Flames were rebuilding there could have been a fit however for a team expected to get home ice; better to split ways instead of having them sit games or take away development for the kid defense.

Murphy will get signed and play somewhere in the AHL this year. The Flames just don't think he has NHL ability and don't want to waste a contract on him.
