I still don't get how this is a win for arizona...NYR have an opportunity to get a very good player at #7. Stepan is 27, so arguably post-apex. Raanta has never been a starter and is a UFA next year.
List of 7 OA players in last 11 years
Clayton Keller
Ivan Provorov
Haydn Fleury
Darnell Nurse
Mathew Dumba
Mark Scheifele
Jeff Skinner
Nazem Kadri
Colin Wilson
Jakub Voracek
Kyle Okposo
Would rather have a random shot at the players in the above list at age 18 than Stepan and Raanta.

A guy named DeAngelo with an attitude headed to New York? Sounds like a good match.

Sure, he could be better than average, but I remain unconvinced. He is 28-years-old, he is not very big, and he is now with his third NHL team.

Kind of looks like McPhee blew the NYR expansion pick if Raanta's return was really going to be that high.
If he could have drafted him and traded him to Flames for a second and Hickey that would have been a win IMO.

Still think that taking a gamble on a young guy like Darling or Raanta (not at this price though, but the Darling price was great) is better than going after the Elliotts and Smiths of the world. This is how Edmonton, Toronto, San Jose all got their very good starting goalies. That's how you get a young guy, you take a chance on someone who has been very good in a limited sample.

Thinking we may see the fruition of this Lindberg pick tonight at the draft. There are still expansion deals in the finalization. There was probably some protection clause on Raanta.

1. Hard to tell how much of the value in the deal is attributed to Stepan and how much for Raanta. If Stepan is worth the 7th overall then maybe Raanta is only worth DeAngelo
2. Flames may not have preferred Raanta over Smith. I know I don't

This is also how Carolina ended up with Eddie Lack, and Edmonton with Ben Scrivezina. It could work, but there is absolutely no guarantee that it will.
The Flames opted rather for a temporary solution while the two or three young goalies they want the most continue to develop in the minors for the next two years. Term was likely the drawback for them on any deal for a player like Raanta or Darling (although I do think that Darling will be terrific).

Goes both ways - also shows that he has a lot of value in trades.
Just got traded in a package for a #1 C and potential top end goalie. Not really just given away.

Hard to say how much of that was DeAngelo's value. I think the 7th overall is probably worth 3-4 times as much as DeAngelo. Not convinced Raanta will be a top end goalie either. I expect him to be an average starter but I guess we'll see

Agree.
Value would be close to a late 1st IMO - so still not the biggest piece of the deal but has some value.

I'm leaning closer to fact than rumour at this point. Still, he has an undeniable offensive ability. A bit of a defensive liability. New York has a high potential project ahead of them.

Well hopefully Raanta isn't the real deal like Talbot ended up being.

The trade will look pretty bad if Raanta bails after one season. I would expect the Coyotes to offer him a 4 or 5 year deal he can't refuse.

Maybe, but they also got a great goalie and Derek Stepan who has had 50 points plus in the last 4 years and is being pretty underrated in this thread.
I would do this trade every day as a Flames fan in this (weak) draft.

Stepan is solid although probably slightly overpaid. Helps shelter Dvorak, Strome and Keller and bring leadership and work ethic.
We don't know if Raanta is a great starter or not. Is he the next Talbot? Or is he the next Bernier, Scrivens, Etc? Only time will tell. Bernier put up great numbers in LA and has been incredibly inconsistent since then. I'm skeptical that he'll be an above average starter, didn't want the Flames to go after him.
The draft is considered weak because of no generational players in the top 2-3. But a pick like 7th or 16th doesn't really seem significantly weaker than previous years.

Big trade. Coyotes looking like they were tearing it down but just hitting reset. Raanta take over for Smith and Stepan is a solid but overpaid centre.
Rangers finally picking in the first round again get a top 10 pick. I like this move for both and makes a bit more sense of the Yotes adding Hjalmmerson

I think the underlying point of contention is "how strong is the 2017 draft?"
If 2017 is going to resemble the 2012 draft - then Rangers lost
If 2017 will resemble the 2008 draft, then its a push
If 2017 is going to be more like any other draft year since 2005 - then the rangers won
