If this is true it's pretty frickin amazing/hilarious.
many people hoped we could free some cap space via Brouwer or Stajan.

Will be interesting to see what kind of salary they offer him.

I wonder what the Avs would want for Nikita Zadorov.

It still is possible that he doesn't work out a deal with them by July 1st and resigns with the flames.. correct?
Same reasoning behind why teams trade for pending UFAs - they want that exclusive negotiating window.

Just speculating, but if Vegas is willing to do this then they (1) want Engelland and (2) legitimately feared the Flames would re-sign him after this expansion draft, but before the UFA period begins. The Flames are now unable to negotiate with Engelland until July 1, which gives Vegas that exclusive window to get him to sign.

As far as losing Engelland goes, he went from being a total joke signing three years ago to a guy who earned every penny of his contract. That's damned impressive, and I'm a little sad to see him go.

Only CP would complain about losing a pending UFA in an expansion draft

this is beyond ridiculous...he is getting more than 5/6 money as a UFA and he is at best a 5/6 dman on this team

We lost him 2 months ago, are you mental? get the knack

Ok that would have been cool too. But if Engelland is the pick, we basically lost nothing. If Brouwer or Stajan was picked I guess we gain something.
Losing nothing is pretty awesome IMO in an expansion draft.

Losing Engelland is the best possible outcome for the Flames. There was no way they were taking Brouwer, and we didn't lose a young forward/defensemen. Compared to other teams we came out relatively unscathed.

The posters praising our depth generally refer to those prospects like Jankowski, Andersson etc. who are not yet waiver eligible.

Some posters, like yours truly, are a little more jaded and aren't yet convinced said prospects are the real deal.

I would suggest the eventual success or failure of this version of the Flames lies in the answer to that question.

You are indeed. What did the NHL GM say about our depth? A UFA is more valuable than Kulak?

And that was always as unlikely as any of us enjoying a threesome with Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence.

Flames lost NOTHING to expansion

Would have had to pay to unload Brouwer

It's not even until July 1st exclusive window.

The UFA interview period begins June 25. They picked him for a 4 day exclusive negotiating window. (if true)

yeah I admit, it's a pretty nice "problem" to have, especially when some other teams in the West (CHI, ANA, MIN) had to give up assets in order to keep the band together.

I became a big fan of Engelland during his time here.

That being said, I'm glad Vegas sounds like they're picking him and not Versteeg in a similar UFA situation.

By this measure you must feel that the Canucks are a deeper team than the Flames, since it is rumoured that VGK selected Luca Sbisa from their impressive crop of defensemen.
