Spearfishing. Instead of the same old boat charter, decided to give it a try in Hawaii. Super fun. Swam with reef sharks, turtles and a million fish. Then had fresh sashimi right on shore.

I have had the privilege of traveling to some exciting foreign places. However, I agree with you that we often forget to discover our own backyard. My sister's family recently moved to northern BC. I have take a weeks vacation to go up and visit this summer. So excited to see them but also see apart of Canada I have not been to before.

For domestic travel, I strongly recommend Quebec City. It's old and has a rich history and is beautiful. It really does feel like a different country. It is also very outdoorsy and has a hint of Maritime culture as well. It's great both in the summer and winter. I try to get there at least once a year.

The people seem as nice as anywhere I have been.

Going there in about 2 weeks!

Having been to all of those (on a motorcycle!) you're bound to have a blast. Another great stop in the area is the town of Deadwood.

Did all three on my ride. Devils Tower was definitely the best of the three. Try and get the campground inside the park. And the breakfast at the little restaurant just outside the park entrance was amazing. One of the most photogenic hunks of rock you'll ever see. It didn't disappoint. Make sure you have a day to spend.

I actually had this photo I took blown up into a print and it's on my wall.

Yeah, I'll comment on this. Got offered a trip to go to St.Johns, Newfoundland last summer and I definitely underestimated how much fun I thought I was going to have. Beautiful environment and total change of pace from busy Calgary. Would go again in a heartbeat.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Has the Crazy Horse monument turned into anything? I was there years ago, and basically we paid money to see a mountain with a hole in it and nothing more.

Hung out at home and lived in the now. These are all cool and all but there is something to be said for just being present and enjoying where you are.

Isn't the thread bucket list items? It's great you have a positive attitude towards life but you haven't convinced me hanging out at home should be on my bucket list.

I'm liking all the travel advice in the thread. I'll put in another vote for living and working in a different country.

I'd definitely echo the sentiment of travelling somewhere, especially somewhere you don't know the language and isn't overrun with (at least international) tourists... where you need to go days without meeting anyone who knows more than a few passing phrases of English.

The other recommendation would be diving into creating some big work of art (of any type... written, music, visual, digital...). Just get lost in the creative process for months on end, wrestle with something that is entirely of your own making but which is somehow larger than you can ever get your mind around.

Back int he mid 90's I spent a month of 2 summers working forestry. Not a typical planter job though. No, this was spent on Texada Island climbing special disease resistant white pine trees to put bags on pine cones. The trees were sissies, so you couldn't use spikes or any gear other than a strap when you got to the top. We had to bag the cones in the spring to keep beetles from destroying them.

The biggest one I climbed was 130 feet. Incredible view of the water and mainland. It was sketchy as hell though. Some of the branches were no bigger than your finger, and brittle. Bees and wasps at height added to the excitement. My hands were a collection of pitch and bark form day one until a week after I got home.

Once(that I witnessed) my crazy boss jumped from one tree top to the other, 80 feet up becuase it was quicker than climbing down(each tree took 1-2 hours). He was like a flying squirrel.

That was quite the summer job.

I echo the earlier comment, Devil's Tower was the best of all three. Great road trip, did that one with my wife before we had kids. Stopped in Yellowstone as well, one of my favourite trips ever.

If you're a mountain biker, go to Moab. For two weeks. Even on non ride days, you can see Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Monument Valley, Four Corners, Mesa Verde isn't far away. I love the southwest.
