Calgary needs new buildings....need more than one option though

One thing though is the land, City is obligated to clean up that land...its ridiculous that it has been left like that

Well, for me it falls more into how much we get back... the city could pay for it in it's entirety for all I care, but I want a reciprocal amount of direct revenue back in return (based on independent projections).

The issue is far too complicated to boil down to a petition like this.
Plus online petitions are lame.
I want to start an online petition to ban online petitions.
I think that would do very well.

I will say even if CalgaryNEXT never sees the light of day I hope that there's continued pressure on the city to clean up the mess. Kind of embarrassing that a city of this stature to have a large plot of contaminated land next to downtown. This is something I would expect more from a city that's run down and on the decline not a relatively young and vibrant city like Calgary.

Considering that the cities contribution to Calgary next would be 900 million plus 150-200 million more in infrastructure not essential to the arena not even you support CalgaryNext as currently proposed.

So you're saying you're cool with tax increases to pay to clean it up? Or what would you do to find the money for it?

I think that depends on what the plan is.
Which is really one of the things I've been saying too. If CalgaryNext isn't the plan for the West Village what is it?
The city seems content to continue to kick that can down the road repeatedly or point fingers elsewhere.
And I think that's just not good enough.
I'd like the city to show some leadership on this specific issue (West Village).

Absolutely I am fine with a tax increase as long as the city provided a proper plan and timetable for the cleanup.

So, logically, doesn't it make way more sense for the city to sell that land to the highest bidder once it's cleaned up? Gifting it to the Flames is more or less the single worst thing they could with it. Selling it to developers is much better fiscal management.

30 minutes or so. Really encourage everyone to listen. You're allowed to be a fan of this team very against King's attempt to guilt the city into a bad deal.
This is absolutely bang on.

Does it make sense to build more condos on the west side when the east village isn't complete? The city can't escape the fact that it's major stadium and arena venues are the worst of all major cities in the country and like it or not they are important venues.

I always had a sneaking suspicion I didn't like Ken King.

Now, after those 30 mins, I know I don't like him.

How long did East Village take to plan and actually get the infrastructure to place that made it attractive to developers. Decades? By the time 1st towers go into West Village, the East Village will be long complete.

However, there are many areas DT that are able to take new development; West End, Beltine and 10th ave, Vic Park; Eau Claire. I think West Village planning, infrastructure changes, and clean-up should move ahead now for 10-15 years from now.

Not agreeing or disagreeing here, but Garth Brooks shows in Edmonton did spur economic boost according to the Oilers.

http://globalnews.ca/news/3348821/ga...ntons-economy/

Simply by having events here, it spurs the economy. The Flames being here, and on game nights, it spurs economic activity.

And there will be a new arena in the East Village, so don't worry, be patient, it'll happen. But CalgaryNEXT is just the Edmonton of large scale projects, absolutely no good. It's so dead it's worth wondering if it was ever alive to begin with.
