Will his successor undo the injustice Treliving himself wrought by bringing back the great saviour Paul Byron?

Chiasson 2.0?? This time a defenseman.
I liked him as a return for Iginla, but was pretty disappointed watching him in Vancouver. Last chance for him as another of Gully's reclamation projects I would think....hopefully he makes the most of it.

Matt Bartkowski played alongside Dougie Hamilton with #Bruins. Again some familiarity. I think this PTO will be brief. Guess soon to sign.

It's a low risk signing.

Honestly it's not a bad move. maybe he works out maybe he doesn't but at least Tre knows how bad our no.4-7 Dman are. At least Bartkowski is a good skater. I don't know what Wideman is good at.

How did Dougie and Bart fare as a pairing in Boston?

I thought the same thing about Grossmann and Chiasson. Turns out "low risk" doesn't really apply with Gulutzan calling the shots on ice time.

I wonder if this might be an indication that there's interest in Jokipakka on the trade market?
I don't know the full rules of in-season NHL PTOs (the only rules I can find are for AHL PTOs), but I believe he can be on a PTO for up to 2 weeks (or so), which would carry through to the trade deadline exactly two weeks from today. I believe he can't play any NHL games while on a PTO, but he can practice with the team during this time. Currently, the Flames have a full 23 man roster, so to fit Bartkowski onto the roster under a standard contract, they'd have to send someone down to Stockton. However, after the deadline, the roster limit is lifted, so he could be signed at that time without sending anyone down, even if they don't trade anyone away.

Loubardias on 960 says he heard Bartowski's name came up a few months ago as someone that the Flames were looking at.

I really liked his game before going to the Canucks. If he can get back to that its a quality signing.

Obviously Bartkowski isn't an upgrade on what the Flames currently have - and for the sake of argument, even if he is, it is negligible.
So, I tend to agree with this signing as meeting the expansion draft requirements.
The question I have about this is - does this mean that Jokipakka and Engelland are definitely not in the plans for next season? Perhaps this is just a 'just in case' signing. Is Jokipakka asking for too much? Flames are just not interested in bringing Jokipakka back on a 1-way, and Jokipakka doesn't want to sign a 2-way? Jokipakka would definitely meet the expansion requirements.
I am ok with the Flames bringing him in, and even better if Gulutzan was the driver behind it. Maybe Gulutzan has some insight into how Bartkowski was utilized and knew it just wasn't a good fit for him in Van, and feels he can be better here? As long as he doesn't play favorites with him, having a coach familiar with a player is a good thing usually.
Interesting and (at least for me) really unexpected. I thought for sure the Flames were going to get Jokipakka re-signed in short order here. I guess they still might, but I am less sure about it now, and wouldn't be surprised if he was simply walked away as a FA in the off-season.
|
Yeah this makes the most sense. Jokipakka hasn't been very good this year and if Calgary doesn't want to re-sign him, signing Bartkowski gives Calgary options at the trade deadline and at the expansion draft, and they can walk away from Jokipakka.
I also wouldn't be surprised if they walk away from guys like Wotherspoon, Culkin and Morrison. Bartkowski would give them some veteran depth for Stockton next year.

Like the signing. Doesn't cost the team any assets either. Should be an upgrade over Wideman seeing as he can actually skate, move the puck and not fall down every other game. Probably gonna struggle defensively at times but I'm tired of seeing Brodie on the left side. If Bartkowski can give us a solid 25 game stretch then it's definitely a move worth the effort.

Bartkowski looked absolutely awful defensively on the Canucks last year. He had become a running joke of the lack of depth Canucks had on Defence.
He can be serviceable on an NHL level, but do not expect too much.

I think he is a (marginally) better option in the NHL than Kulak or Wotherspoon.

If he can skate better than wideman, its a great move. the whole "lets look like we are skating in wet cement" thing is so 2013.

Very unimpressed with Bartkowski in multiple viewings in Boston and Vancouver.
Found out he was a Flame due to a text from a Canucks fan. It read, "HAHAHA Bartowski couldn't even crack my horrible defense, which could be the worst in the league, bold move Treliving!"
