I think that it will be interesting when the facts come out. I put very little credence into Bissonette's Facebook page. He had a sprinkling of likes in there that range on both sides of the political spectrum. He liked the head of a nationalist party in Quebec, and he liked Trump, but he also liked the PQ and Jack Layton.
I think its too soon to label this as either an act of Islamic Terror, or an act of Nationalist Terror.
I think its way to early to be something that's even linked to Trump's stupid immigration ban.

Well it IS terrorism, and they DID target Muslims.
That doesn't speak to all the angles or the motives.
What is your point?

If I ever went crazy and someone researched my FB "likes" it would confuse the hell out of them. I like things I disagree with and agree with in an attempt to get both sides of headline stories.

It might be a hate crime, which is different than terrorism.
Both heinous.
I was also surprised that this was labelled as terrorism when the RCMP/Quebec police said motive was still being investigated.

I suspect it's probably a hate crime regardless, no?

Facebook likes are one of many components why fake news is such a problem these days. Generating "news" from barely connected sources with no evidence or confirmation, but simply based on the most general of circumstances - looking at someone's profile and making generalizations. leading to assumptions, which forms public opinion.

Bissonnette is also apparently a Katy Perry supporter.
Too soon to tell if there is a connection?

Apparently don't even have the name correct
Mohamed Belkhadir is the other suspect in custody
From LaPresse
Mosquée: le suspect s'appelle Mohamed Belkhadir et non Mohamed Khadir, ont affirmé à La Presse plusieurs personnes le connaissant.
Edit: and apparently only Bissonnette is considered to be actively involved. Wow, terrible misinformation

Liking Trump is pretty whatever to me. But Marine Le Pen is the leader of a French Party that has repeatedly connected terrorism to Islam and she herself has spoke out against immigration leading to Sharia law in France. As a political studies student, he certainly knows that. Could be liked ironically or prior to changing his views, I guess, but if he had acted alone it would be relatively safe to assume why he did this.
But then teaming up with a potential Muslim-immigrant. Even if he doesn't identify as Muslim, people who support leaders like Marine Le Pen aren't the ones who usually differentiate like that. It's very strange, as tragic and sad as it is, (and I don't want to diminish the tragedy) but I agree it will be interesting.
I'm somewhat leaning towards two #######s who were looking to make a name for themselves, less so than politically motivated.

The only person who has called it terrorism is Trudeau, the police are still investigating. Would seem prudent to wait until the investigation is a bit more progressed, especially if you are the PM.

Maybe suspect, but no motive has been released, so no way to tell.

That's absolutely disgusting if true. Media needs to get their #### together, to defame someone like that and inflame the idiots who read about Mohamed yelling Allahu Akbar before shooting up the place...

sometimes I hate Twitter because we get so many mistaken facts and illogical leaps of logic.
Now we've got the names wrong, and the person that called the police wrong.

I would argue in the days before instant internet news and Twitter. Where you had set periods where news came out that there was a lot more time to fact check and a lot more effort. Now these reporters run screaming to their twitter accounts and so do their news organizations. Because of that they give huge credibility to the concept of not necessarily false news, but untrustworthy news.

The source that the media used to confirm the names of the suspects was a Quebec City court clerk, not Twitter.
So either the clerk deliberately lied or this latest development is incorrect.
BBC article
Quote:
Quebec City court clerk Isabelle Ferland named the suspects as Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed el Khadir.
The two men allegedly opened fire at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre on Sunday night, leaving six people dead.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and a second suspect called 911 to give himself up, police said on Monday.
|
TO Star
Quote:
QUEBEC CITY—The two men arrested in the shooting rampage at a mosque in the Quebec community of Ste-Foy that killed six people and injured 19 will appear in court later this afternoon.
The alleged shooters are Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed Khadir, a courthouse clerk confirmed to the Star. As of Monday morning, no charges have yet been filed in court.

Eh, I hate the media as much as everyone. But it appears a Quebec court clerk had confirmed both names as suspects.

In the absence of any confirmed information you are left with speculation. this speculation runs rampant on social media.
CBC had their security expert interviewed a number of times this morning including after the press conference.
he expressed regret that the RCMP/Police were not more prepared to answer questions on the suspects. When there is concern of terror and motive in an attack like this, the public is understandibly concerned. Without providing more information, it leaves the public - and the media - scrambling to become amateur sleuths to try and find information.
The point he was making is that much of this could have been curtailed by providing more information about the suspects, or perhaps setting a time when information on the suspects would be provided.

Trump is wrong about 99.9% of things but he's absolutely right about media. They're scum who will do anything for views and attentions.
Calgary Sun yesterday had the word terrorist written "terrorist" in their headline describing this terrorist attack. It absolutely is a terrorist attack and calling it otherwise is flat out wrong.
