Anchovie stuffed olives are the best thing ever. Try them. I'm eating some now.

Kalamata Grocery rocks.
We lived right near here when first moving to Calgary and shopped here often. Ill still stop in when Im in the area and pickup a few things, like OLIVES.
I highly recommend checking it out. If you need another excuse to get there, its in the same block as Galaxie Diner. Go for breakfast then get some olives.
Rock on!

Olives by their nature are generally salty as they are preserved in brine and are usually picked in the fall, so technically by the time they arrive in North America, its usually a winter food product. Olives can stay "fresh" for a long time, over a year in a lot of cases due to the salt content.
They are an excellent source of many nutrients and have many heart benefits from the monounsaturated fat, which is a healthy fat. If you take out the pits in an olive, such as a pitted Kalamata olive, you loose a little of the flavor. Keeping the pit is the best way to go for full flavor. If you really want to add some nice taste I would suggest sprinkling just a little bit of olive oil and a pinch of fresh oregano (crush it in the palm of your hand using your other hand, this brings out the aromas)
Another little tip is not to be duped by some stores with sky high prices on things such as Italian olives and Italian olive oil. In my PERSONAL opinion, Italians do a much better job of marketing their cuisine and get away with higher prices. A lot of olives and olive oil that is marked "imported from Italy" is generally Greek or olives from Spain that Italian producers source for their products. Generally speaking, a product will say "product of Italy, Greece, Spain" etc if its product is fully from that region.
I usually don't do this but if anybody is interested, my family owns the little Greek grocery store downtown called Kalamata Grocery. We have an insane amount of olives from all over the world and samples are always free!! Some of my favorite olives are garlic stuffed, feta cheese stuffed and jalapeno stuffed. Prices are also very fair and much lower than almost anywhere else in the city.
If anybody has any additional questions about olives, olive oil or Greek cuisine in general, let me know.

Saw a can of salmon stuffed olives at Lina's. Not sure if I wanted to try them or not. Seems like it should be good, but I wonder if the first experience shouldn't be out of a can.

This thread has inspired me to force myself to start eating olives. I'm starting my olive career with pitted green olives I found at the olive bar in Superstore. This is mainly because they are healthy though, I've been pretty much indifferent to the taste. Perhaps I will start to enjoy them.

Ugh, Superstore olives are low grade. I couldn't even finish the batch I got from there. I used to be like you, hated olives. Then I went to Spain an had real olives, and that changed my mind. So do yourself a favour and get some good ones.

All this olive talk forced me to buy the giant assorted stuffed green olive jar from Costco - pimentos, jalapenos, garlic and even almonds....so yummy. These are different than any other ones I've seen at Costco though, they're in a fancy shaped glass jar. The olives are a good size and nice and firm too, not all mushy.
Although I'll now be adding Kalamata to the list of places to head to.

Stopped in to Kalamata this afternoon and boy was it worth it.
Got a couple different types of olives, but the ones with spices on them are like candy.
Great place your family has there curves, and the olive man behind the counter was great giving out samples and letting my son try the different types.

Stopped there after work tonight.
You weren't lying about the olive quality! Picked up some blue cheese stuffed and they didn't make it back to the truck before they were sampled.
Will definitely be back. Nice little shop. Used to live near there, can't believe I never went.

I figured I hated olives, at least as a kid I knew I did.
This thread convinced me to actually try them again. I frequent Kalamata grocery but usually I'd only go there to pick up those oh-so-perfect wraps/pitas. This time I bought olives and gave them a try.
Glorious. I think the garlic stuffed are a little strong for my liking, the aged black pit-in ones are phenomenal.

yeah, those wrinkly black bastards are the moroccan salt cured. I'm eating a bowl of them right now. Not cheap but who cares.
Glad you've had a mid-life awakening to the glory of the olive.
I find garlic stuffed olives to be strong as well. I like olives and I like garlic, but I like to add only a couple of those stuffed ones to the rest of my pit-in selection, balances things out a bit. Also, wine and cheese.
