The thing I love about Matthew is he is exactly what he himself advertised.
He said he'd make the team and he did. His boosters, former coaches teammates all said he has the ability to draw everyone into the game and he really does and all without hurting the team.
Loved watching him steal Burns stick and Glue gun had a hard time not laughing after the game .
This kid is gonna be fun to watch for so many years and reasons

Thats an easy thing to say but not entirely true.can anyone argue regarding Matthews skills?
I went to Toronto last September because of the World Cup. It wasn't pretty.,because... I thought that Toronto would be a Hockey town. It wasn't.

When has being in Toronto helped anyone? The Columbus Blue Jackets have more NHL awards than Toronto since they came into the NHL. The last award a Leaf won was Doug Gilmour and Pat Burns in 1993. CUJO and Belfour put up amazing goalie numbers on a contender for 6 straight seasons and never won a Vezina.
And D and goaltending aren't harder positions. And with his injury, Murray is out of contention.
Matthews is without a doubt the best overall rookie.

No one cares about the World Cup let's be honest.
The problem in big cities is they just think they can fleece people with outrageous ticket prices. It won't work in a tournament.

I would love to see him get a nomination but don't think he has a chance against this class of rookies.

Love Tkachuk and he's having a fantastic year but if the nominees are limited to 3, it's hard for me to see justification for him over Matthews, Laine or Murray.

Matthews is without a doubt the best overall rookie... so far.....

FYP.
If Tkachuk ends up in the points lead while playing a big role in getting to the playoffs, the only reason anyone else should win it would be pure name recognition.

For the people crying about Matthews winning because he plays for Toronto, the last time a Leafs player won the Calder was Brit Selby. The following year Bobby Orr won it....
Might be more of the fact that Matthews is on pace for 45 goals that he's considered the favourite.

I do like Matthews. Would ave no problem with him winning based on what I've seen so far.

Actually I was expecting... more? Almost all the people we talked to said that Blue Jays was the most popular team in Toronto. I didn't expect that baseball competed with hockey in Canada.

That's because of the time of the year you were in TO. Blue Jays are definitely not the most popular pro-sports team in TO, but you were there when the Jays were getting ready to start another playoff run so of course the focus would be on them.
Also I agree with BigTuna that not a lot of people cared about the World Cup especially because they were charging so much for tickets and it was the first time ever.

What a year for rookies. Tkachuk is great but would be lucky to finish top 5 imo.
If I had to rank them;
Werenski
Mathews
Laine
Murray
Marner
Tkachuk
Nylaner
Konecny
Aho
Mantha

Common misconception. Toronto is a Maple Leafs town, not a hockey town.

Of the 2016 draftees Tkachuk has very easily jumped to 3rd in that group and we got him at 6. I know a ton can change with Puljujarvi, Dubois, and Joulevi and this can all change quickly but you have to wonder if Chia could do it all over again he would take Tkachuk 4th.

No where near the all around game that Tkachuk has.
Nylander is very one-dimensional at this point and would have to have a pretty good lead in points on Tkachuk to be ranked ahead of him.

LOL - exactly the kind of thing that goes beyond points and plays. So satisfying to have a top 6 shift disturber on the Flames.
