And if there is anyone to blame for Baerstchi wanting out, it is Hartley.
Not Treliving and not Burke. Burke can say whatever he wants, at the end of the day, it was Hartley who controlled where and how much Baertschi was going to play.

It's definitely true that Hartley did not give Baertschi many minutes, but it's also true that Treliving called him up sparingly as well. Jooris and Granlund were both called up well before Baertschi in 2014-15, and both played way more games for the flames - deservedly so as Jooris could fill the bottom 6 grinder role that is just not Baertschi's game, and Granlund was outproducing Baertschi in the AHL. There were plenty of reasons why he couldn't crack the lineup.
Oh wait, we're talking about Wotherspoon. I think it's been said by many posters in this thread already, that while Wotherspooon plays a decent defensive game, there is no particular area that he excels at at the NHL level. He has had what, 4?5? NHL training camps and played a handful of NHL games over the last 4 seasons, but has yet to earn a full time spot on the Flames. And that's ok, he may carve out an NHL career as a journeyman bottom paring guy, but that's not the kind of guy that you "make room for". (or protect in the expansion draft, lol what??) As with any Flames prospect, I'm always hopeful that they do well and I have no ill will against him as a person, but to me it seems unlikely that he turns into a top 4 defenseman on the Flames.
