Yeah I'd be surprised if Fox and Parsons don't make the team. Really interested to see what Fox can do in this tourney, looks like he might have been a huge steal by the Flames.

The Canadian team? I'm not too surprised.

Tampa has 3 of their 2015 picks in this tournament and 2 of their 2016 picks;
For comparison, the Flames have 3 of their 2015 draft picks playing pro, 2 of their 2016 picks playing pro, and likely 3 other 2016 picks in this tournament
The Flames are doing ok
edit, Don't know how many non-Canadian Tampa prospects may also be in the WJHC

the crazy thing is that their only 1st rounder in camp got cut (Brett Howden) ... instead two 2nd rounders, two 3rd rounders and even a 4th rounder make it. That's just incredible work by their scouting department.

So for Fox, due to NCAA/amateur rules, does he have to pay his own way and accommodations for the WJC's? At least it's in Montreal, not terribly far from Harvard, but what if it was in Europe? Seems like that would be a hard thing for a player in college to finance.

The World Juniors aren't considered professional. So it's all good.

So with Canada's roster now pretty much set, the focus turns to team and chemistry building:
Mark Masters @markhmasters
Lines at Canada practice:
Dubois-Strome-McLeod
Joseph-Barzal-Raddysh
Jost-Roy-Gauthier
Dube-Cirelli-Stephens
Absent: Speers (maintenance)
Also looks like Canada will be relying on Dube on the PK.

Has anyone ever calculated what % of Canadian WJC players go on to have substantial NHL careers?

In a 20-tournament stretch from 1991 to 2010, 219 of 304 Canadian world junior skaters went on to play at least 150 NHL games. That’s 72 percent. Twenty of 34 goalies, or 58.8 percent, played 50 or more NHL games. Among Americans, 122 of 284 skaters, 43 percent, played 150 and just nine of 33 goalies, 27.3 percent, played 50. Still, put the North American groups together and we get 58 percent of skaters and 43.3 percent of goaltenders hitting our established benchmarks.
In a stretch of 20 NHL drafts over that same span of years, only twice did more than half the players picked play even one NHL game, and those groups barely made the cut, with the high being 51.9 percent from 2009. The one-or-more-game club for North American WJC players over that span is 81.2 percent. So there’s clearly a strong correlation between participating in the tourney and fruitful NHL careers.

Karnaukhov survives first round of cuts for Russia:
Russian Prospects @RUSProspects
First U20 Russia NT roster cuts have been made: Artyomov, Ivashov, Kotlyarevskiy, Maltsev, Petrishchev and Yepishin are out.
Russia is down to 15 forwards. They usually take 12 forwards 8 d-men 3 goalies, which means Karnaukhov needs to survive 3 more forward cuts.
edit: that is of course assuming Russia doesn't add Klim Kostin after the WJAC are over

There is absolutely no way Adam Fox isn't a prominent member of Team USAs blueline at this tournament. He is having an incredible freshman season at Harvard. He's a lock.

When Johnny was a prominent USA WJHC player I cheered for him more than Team Canada. Don't know if that makes me a good Flames fan, a bad Canadian, or both.

as it stands, only 4 teams (PHI, TB, OTT, CHI) will have more prospects at the WJC. If all Flames make the cut, of course. Somebody at HF posted a team breakdown:
Quote:
1. Philadelphia Flyers: 8 (Hart, Myers, Laczynski, Sandström, Bernhardt, Rubtsov, Vorobyov, Tomek)
2. Ottawa Senators: 6 (Chabot, Brown, White, Ahl, Dahlén, Chlapík)
3. Tampa Bay Lightning: 6 (Ingram, Cirelli, Joseph, Raddysh, Stephens, Hájek)
4. Chicago Blackhawks: 6 (Krys, DeBrincat, L. Carlsson, Dahlström, Bondra, From)
5. Boston Bruins: 5 (Lauzon, Lindgren, McAvoy, Vladar, Zbořil)
6. Calgary Flames: 5 (Dubé, Parsons, Fox, Kylington, Karnaukhov)
7. Toronto Maple Leafs: 5 (Woll, Bracco, Grundström, Korostelev, Dzierkals)
8. Dallas Stars: 5 (Cecconi, Ruusu, Karlström, Guryanov, Vala)
9. Minnesota Wild: 4 (Greenway, Kunin, Eriksson Ek, Kaprizov)
10. Carolina Hurricanes: 4 (Bean, Gauthier, Roy, Kuokkanen)
11. New Jersey Devils: 4 (McLeod, Speers, Anderson, Rykov)
12. Buffalo Sabres: 4 (Fitzgerald, Asplund, Nylander, Budík)
13. Arizona Coyotes: 3 (Strome, Keller, Lööke)
14. NY Islanders: 3 (Barzal, Bellows, Koivula)
15. Columbus Blue Jackets: 3 (Dubois, G. Carlsson, Thürkauf)
16. Winnipeg Jets: 3 (Foley, Roslovic, Špaček)
17. Los Angeles Kings: 3 (Clague, Moverare, Černák)
18. Anaheim Ducks: 3 (Terry, Nättinen, Larsson)
19. Washington Capitals: 3 (Samsonov, Siegenthaler, Riat)
20. Nashville Predators: 3 (Fabbro, Harper, Trenin)
21. Detroit Red Wings: 3 (Saarijärvi, Hronek, van Pottelberghe)
22. St. Louis Blues: 3 (Thompson, Musil, Krag Christensen)
23. San Jose Sharks: 3 (Blichfeld, Čukste, Balcers)
24. Montreal Canadiens: 2 (Juulsen, Sergachyov)
25. Vancouver Canucks: 2 (Juolevi, Jašek)
26. Colorado Avalanche: 2 (Jost, Werner)
27. NY Rangers: 2 (Zborovsky, Huska)
28. Edmonton Oilers: 2 (Jones, Räsänen)
29. Pittsburgh Penguins: 2 (Björkqvist, Gustavsson)
30. Florida Panthers: 1 (Borgström)

pretty crazy that Philly has 8 players there despite the fact that Provorov and Konecny are unavailable because they're already in the NHL. Tampa has 5 Canadians, but "only" one player from other countries.

Lines at the USA camp per Joe Yerdon
White-Thompson-DeBrincat
Bellows-Keller-Anderson
Foley-Brown-Bracco
Harper-Roslovic-Laczynski
Terry-Kunin-Greenway
Ahcan-McAvoy
Lindgren-Fox
Krys-Cecconi
Jones-Fitzgerald
One weakness identified by nhl.com of the USA d is size.
Cecconi is 6'2'' 205lbs
McAvoy is 6'1'' 212lbs
Jones is 6'1'' 192lbs
Lindgren is 6'0'' 198lbs
Krys is 6'0'' 185lbs
Fitzgerald is 5'11'' 185lvs
Fox is 5'10'' 185lbs
Achan is 5'8'' 170lbs
They may have a tough time dealing with the larger forwards in this tournament.

Lines today at USA practice, which have been changing everyday. Looks like the coach is juggling them around looking for chemistry.
Mike Morreale @mikemorrealeNHL
Early lines from USA select camp: Kunin-Greenway-Terry; Bellows-DeBrincat-Roslovic; Harper-White-Laczynski; Anderson-Keller-Thompson; Foley-Brown-Bracco
Mike Morreale @mikemorrealeNHL
There really haven't been defensive pairings in the opening 3 days of camp. Motzko has had different combos almost every shift
Mike Morreale @mikemorrealeNHL
So here are what appear to be reg. def pairs from USA Hockey select camp: Lindgren-McAvoy; Jones-Fox; Ahcan-Cecconi; Krys-Fitzgerald
Fox paired with an Oilers prospect = no good.
Also coach said he doesn't plan on making any cuts until after the game on Dec 21
