Thermostats are not difficult to do. Odds are your wires are already labelled. Even if they are not, just note what lettered slot they are currently plugged in to. It's really hard to screw up tbh. Pop your current one off the base and you will see what I'm getting at pretty quick. All thermostats have something similar to the image below.
As to whether or not you have a C wire, if your furnace is relatively new you likely do have one. Even if you don't, the thermostat you got for Christmas apparently has a work around available.

If you ever find yourself wondering "man does it seem cold in here", programmable thermostats' batteries wear out eventually, took me almost a whole day to figure that out.

My house was built within the last year. We moved in May 19th, so I'm guessing it's all there.
If you say I can do it, the liability is all on you when my family freezes to death on account of a screwed up thermostat!

Just follow the instructions, and turn the furnace off first! Shouldn't be a problem.

I installed my ecobee and had to use their power extender kit. Wasn't too hard.

I use the real thermostat that I installed inside a closet on the other side of the wall from where my wifes 'real' thermostat is.

It's super easy. Pull your existing thermostat and see what wires it has. they should be labelled (bot not necessarily colour coded!).

I have installed 3 ecobee3's in the past few months (2x in my house and 1x in the inlaws). Happy to provide assistance if you need. I love the remote sensors, but the killer-app is the frost-control mode on the built in humidifier control that the ecobee3 has. The nests, etc of the world can't do that and it ensures that your house is always at a comfortable humidity level, while ensuring you don't get excess condensation build up on your windows with our wild temperature swings... So good.

Haha. That why I suggested it during warmer weather 
Ecobee certainly sounds like it where it's at for thermostats. Will certainly buy one of those when we are in a new house. Can't wait to finally get to buy modern toys!

Room sensors! I always wondered why this wasn't done.
Next step would be baffles in the ducts to be able to direct heat to zones or even a single room if required.

I did it, but not without some panic. The black wire went to the "black" labelled spot on the old thermostat. Turns out it was actually the c wire once I had a good look at the wiring on the furnace
