Gord Miller is an outstanding PBP guy, IMO. Upper echelon for sure.
I can't even imagine the World Juniors without him. Such an iconic voice for that. Guys like him and Cuthburt really make me wish TSN had NHL games again...
Nobody has mentioned Craig Simpson for color guys, but I find he is very informative and insightful. I actually quite like he and Hughson as a pair.
Definitely like Ball and Hrudey as well. I miss Cuthbert doing hockey.
Romanuk , Remenda, Healy, all terrible.
When Hughson and Simpson first started doing games together, I really liked them. Then they added Glenn Healy who still has yet to say something nice about another human being, and none of Hughson's quirks were remotely acceptable.
I was astonished just how much better the broadcasts in the World Cup were when it was just those two in the booth doing their jobs, instead of Glenn Healy interjecting every several seconds to troll the world.
We as Flames fans are so lucky to get Ball and Hrudey for the majority of our games. They're a national quality broadcast team and compared to what we had to tolerate with Millions, Loubo, Kerr, Simmer etc.
Bob Cole remains the best. I will fight anyone who disagrees.
Favorite: (tie) Rick Ball, Kelly Hrudey, Bob McKenzie, Pierre Lebrun
Least favorite: Don Cherry
Honorable mention, least favorite: Every other commentator/analyst not already mentioned
I don't care for any hockey pbp - for the most part I find the chatter is just describing what I can see on the screen - its because the game flows too quickly for any useful pbp
the best for me is al michaels and chris collinsworth on SNF
also like matty dunigan as a color on cfl broadcasts.
With technology the way it is now, I wish they could allow you to just have rink noise without and commentary. I really don't need to hear anyone tell me what is going on.
If they can't let you choose SAP and what language to watch the game in, why can't they let you choose, no commentary and just the "live game experience"?

I find his voice too close to Kermit the Frog (HE SCORORESSSSS!!!) to really enjoy him. Iconic maybe, but not in a good way for me. I could take him or leave him. Chris Cuthbert is great, but I really miss Don Whittman.
Ed Whalen. Man he was awesome IF you were a Flames fan. What an absolute homer the guy was. It was like listening to a fan called out of the stands doing the PBP. It was OK though since the broadcasts he did were only regional.
One guy not mentioned is Don Whitman. He was my favorite HNIC PBP guy of all time. He made some epic calls in the BOA days, and also during the 04 run.
Aeneas might still have this on VHS:
(during a brawl with the Oilers i think)
Ed: "one does not want to condone fighting in hockey . . . WHAT A PUNCH BY HUNTER!!!"
I just got here. Came in to mention Gord Miller. Dick Irvin and Danny Gallivan were great when I was a kid.
And Rod Black can go hang out with Healy and Cox anytime now.
Cole can retire anytime now too please. People go on and on about his cadence etc. Never really liked it and if you are just listening to him and not watching, you would honestly have no idea what is actually going on in the game. He is horrible for actual play by play right now.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Bob Cole is terrible. Constantly getting names wrong, going off on weird tangents, super aggravating voice. Should've retired a decade ago.

Dating myself but Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin are the sound of hockey to me. Fueled mostly by nostalgia but those guys were great. Irvin big Hans fan obviously.
I used to love to hate Howie Meeker. Thought Gary Dornhoefer was ok on color.
Or Dave Hodge for speaking his mind on HNIC....
later getting fired.
The best thing that happened to Hodge was that moment. He was an otherwise mediocre broadcaster who became a hero for sticking up to the man.
Now he's a cranky old man who likes to yell at the clouds.

The guys at sportsnet need to watch a telecast and get the same frustration as Dave Hodge. Their product is terrible but no one on that clown channel knows how terrible they are.
Rick Jeanneret and Jim Lorentz for me, the sound of Sabres hockey for two decades and tons of iconic calls. RJ is in the Bob Cole category of "probably should've retired by now" but he can still call a great game.
