Do you remember the wingers Monahan played with in that stint? Maybe he would have better luck with Tkachuk and Brouwer/Versteeg? We could also supplement that by putting our top pairing behind them.

Hudler was one, and I believe Colborne was the other. I am not sure a rookie Tkachuk is going to drive play better than Hudler and Brouwer/Versteeg/Colborne are pretty interchangeable, maybe with an edge to Versteeg.

Gulutzen called him that in at least one interview I heard. Especially regarding "teambuilding".

Agree with this. Even if it costs Mony some minutes, get him away from that match up. He needs to play against RNH or whatever is passing for their 3rd line, not McDavid. Mony's offense will get stifled just trying to contain him and Backlund is much more suited to the task.

So Staples is accusing Tkachuk of a "Semi-slew foot". And has a gif playing on his article of Hamilton's penalty clearing the front of the net, when McJesus can't hold his ground.

The Oilers may well have payback on their mind, given some of the dirty plays in Wednesday’s game in Edmonton, with Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk giving the semi-slew foot to Brandon Davidson, badly injuring the Edmonton d-man, and Calgary d-man Dougie Hamilton hammering Connor McDavid into the the goalposts.

Biggest thing is going to be getting Gio and Brodes out against McDavid.

I remember Bennett at center, head to head with McDavid (early in the season, in Edmonton).

The Flames side:

Calgary Flames: Brian Elliott. The Flames keeper needs to have a better showing than he did in the season opener. Elliott’s defence didn’t help him, but he did let in a few soft goals and looked to be fighting the puck at times.
Edmonton Oilers: Kris Russell. The former Flame took it to his former club on Wednesday night. He registered 2 assists on the night, while taking one shot on net. It will be interesting to see if the opening night momentum he had in Edmonton will carry over to this game in Calgary.

7-0 Flames.
By the end, Oilers fans will be driving to Rexall, err, Rogers place to throw their jerseys on the ice there.

Flames have an excellent defensive duo in Backlund-Frolik, not sure why you wouldn't use them against McDavid at every opportunity.
Bennett is better utilized in an offensive role imo.

Gaudreau and Bennett can create their own offense. They both can take the puck up ice and create a scoring opportunity out of nothing. Monahan is great at finishing, but he can't create offense by himself.
If you want a 1A and 1B line like you say you do, then you keep Bennett and Gaudreau on separate lines.
|
Completely agree. Two years ago, I couldn't wait for a line of Gaudreau-Bennett-and anyone, but watching the way they have evolved, as well as Monahan, it makes more sense to build two lines with them.
Monahan is a perfect complement to Gaudreau as he knows how to find open ice and has a laser of a shot. Gaudreau likes to create plays from the side wall or up high.
Bennett meanwhile, likes to create plays from down low. But the key thing is, he (too) likes to create plays. Bennett's perfect complement is Tkachuk.
And the most important thing is that these pairings create two dynamic lines.

Need a big win here or we're never going to hear the end of it for the next couple months. Also Elliot needs a bounce back game.

As a general rule, yes. And against most teams.
But the particular issue here is Bennett's desire to compete against McDavid. They have a very long history together, and Bennett is fiercely competitive.
If Bennett neutralizes McDavid, the rest of the Flames dominate the rest of the Oilers.

I just want to see McDavid get lit up on a clean, open ice check. Is that too much to ask?

What a stupid column, and the day and age of gooning things up is over.
But basically if the Oilers start being rambunction, or going after Tkachuk, I would tell a Lucic that if they don't knock it off, I'm coming at McDavid with my elbow at eyeball level.
The oilers can't afford the escalation. I would love to see the oilers try to do a Hartley and start those slowfooted cement heads on the ice, it would be a quick 1-0 lead.

Yeah they sure do have a long history. Sleep overs, their fathers are best friends, played together on the most stacked team in the history of the GTA.
I have a feeling Bennett would absolutely maul McDavid. Bennett is a dog. I think it would be really hard for Connor to play against Sam. However I dont think we need to - because Sam is better suited to playing offensive minutes and developing that. Not to mention we need him in an offensive role because we dont have many people who can do what he does.
Brodie + Gio and Backlund + Frolik can do the job perfectly imo. Especially Backlund and Brodie.
