In the end they liked Engelland to continue to be a staple on the 3rd pairing. Somebody had to be the 7th D. Kulak will get his chance but in the meantime, get quality playing time.

WTF is this garbage?!? He was clearly terrible and slow to even an amateur observer. Kulak was far, far better in every capacity.

I can't understand this, even considering he's the 7th man.

He's the 7th man. He won't play most nights. They obviously felt it would be better for Kulak to get playing time in Stockton over sitting in the press box in Calgary.

Grossman was just ok in the preseason although at times, he was flat out horrible. That first game in Winnipeg comes to mind. He struggled all game long. Somebody must have a plan. Let's see what BT has planned.

No, Kulak looked better carrying the puck and generating offense than Grossman. Grossman looked better seperating opposition forwards from the puck and on the PK.

We have 5 guys who carry the puck and generate offense better than Kulak right now. Kulak is redundant for now. Hopefully, they can move Wideman, than Kulak can slot in properly.

Wideman is the reason that Kulak doesn't have a spot.

Grossman is the 7th defenseman in the press box.

Apparently Brodie is moving to the left side

Where's that coming from? Haven't heard or seen any evidence that #1 pairing isn't Gio-Brodie.

It's funny because the "amateur observers" said he sucked, but then the "professional observers" said he played well.

Would Kulak not have to be protected if he plays too many NHL games and does this allow BT to protect some guys from the expansion draft by not having them play? So this is potentially the perfect signing in case of injury + Expansion draft protection?

I'd play Kulak in our top-6 so either way I think he gets shafted.

I haven't seen enough Grossman this preseason to decide how I feel about this, other than if it is a mistake, it's not a big one.

What I do know, is D-men that play his style are often under appreciated and under-rated by most fans. They don't have the foot speed, so are always get labeled as ineffective because of it. People also tend to underrate a stay at home D-man's hockey IQ, lumping the lack of skill in with hockey IQ. Engelland while over paid slightly, still get's painted with this brush around here, despite performing very admirably since joining the Flames.

Kulak just needs to keep his head down and continue to work his butt off.

I've liked him sine he was drafted (I like Culkin too). If he can stay healthy next year should be his year to break out full time as an NHLer (unless there are lots of injuries this year). Wideman, Engelland are off the books and it's wide open after Gio, Brodie and Hamilton.

Gulutzan said Brodie will start the season on the left side with Engelland. Giordano will be with Wideman.

Taken with the Versteeg signing, this has the whiff of the Sutter years, when the depth positions were all stuffed with marginal veterans. At some point our development system is going to have to start providing 2-3 roster players a season to fill out the lineup.

Problem is that pretty much every defender not our big 3 is a 7th dman

I actually like that. Gio can elevate Wideman and Brodie had chemistry with Engelland in the past. If things don't work out they can change it. I think they play with line change setting on so don't worry...
