Keep in mind that the price probably isn't that low for the Flames, for that exact reason. If they trade him to Chicago, and he turns his game around, there won't be any Oilers fans calling for Chia's head like there would be if he went to Calgary and turned into a solid player.

At the start of the summer, a Wideman+ for Yakupov+ deal was a no-brainer for all parties involved.
Wideman is in the last year of what could be his last contract. He's been squeezed out of the top 4 and won't get minutes, leading to low interest for him next summer.
Yakupov has been in struggle city for the last 4 years and desperately needs a change of scenery.
The Flames are coming out of their rebuild and they need some more young talent, especially a shoot-first RW that can skate.
The Oilers need a RHS PPQB that isn't locked up on crazy term or that has crazy high trade value, since they've almost run out of assets to trade.
It would have been perfect for all parties, but thanks to the rivalry, nobody wins.

I completely agree with this. I think it's actually a pretty good deal for both sides. Plus, if we're still hoping to sign Russell, moving Wideman would allow for Kulak to stay in the lineup.

Keep in mind that the price for the Flames is likely higher given the rivalry.

I'd do it... unfortunately a deal that involves a player waiving his NMC to go to Edmonton seems pretty farfetched.

But I'm told Edmonton is where all the good players want to go now.
Realistically, Wideman could get way more minutes there, whereas here he's going to be 3rd pair material, which for a guy like him is quite the come-down. So maybe he'd waive.

Frankly I don't think Wideman would waive his NMC for any team. He has been in Calgary for four years now and I assume he has a family. I wouldn't want to move the family to another city for one season just to have them move again the year after. Maybe at the deadline he would accept a trade since he would only be separated from the family for a short while.

Edmonton might be one of the few places Wideman would be willing to waive for, following this line of thought. It's a 3 hour drive away, the family wouldn't even have to move.
The bigger issue is that Edmonton as a team is a festering stinkhole, and maybe Wideman only wants to go to a contender.

I get that, but what kind of contract is he going to get next year if he's playing 3rd pairing minutes with us?
He's a professional hockey player, so assuming he's been even remotely smart with his money, he's set for life already. But you have to think he's still interested in getting as big of a payday as possible next year.
Also, I'd rather move my family for a year at the start of the school year, rather than either uproot them in late February or be separated from them for two months.

he's separated from them constantly anyways, 2 months wouldn't be all that hard for an NHL player. I, unfortunately, had to do that move (Cgy to Edm)and be apart from my family 5 days/week for 3 months and we made it work, and that's with significantly less resources than Wideman - which does help - he can fly them in, have nannies, housekeepers etc to help out for the 2 months.

I think Wideman knows he's not getting another big payday, no matter where he's traded. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't in the league next season.

Price goes from a D level prospect to a C level prospect?
Treliving offers a 3rd rounder for this bum he'd be in Calgary right now.

Looking at him play today and he still looks the same, a supposedly offensive 3rd line winger who has lost confidence in his offense while carrying a 2.5 million cap hit. Hard to like anything about his game.

The rumor has Edmonton interested in Mark McNeill, and the Oil retaining the bulk of Yak's salary...both would be RFAs after this season...I wouldn't be surprised to see a D-prospect thrown in, Forsling and Kempny will easily pass Pokka in the 'Hawk organizational depth chart...I think this move happens....
Yak did ok under Kruger, the talent IS there...Q would be a better coach than any of the crap he's had in Edmonton...and will have stable ponies in Anisimov and Panarin, along with a better culture that DEMANDS, at least, 2-way EFFORT from all the players.

While true, I think a lot of it has to do with the 'Russian Factor.'
We talk about it a lot in regards to draft position, but it also affects performance.
I think in a lot of respects Yakupov is just done with Edmonton. Once his shine wore off and they moved on to newer shinier toys he just slumped.
A change of scenery might be just what he needs.

TSN reporter speculating on an idea already being bandied about on CP for months:
Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Which team says no to Yakupov for Wideman deal? CGY retains half, gets flexibility to sign Russell. EDM gets no-risk RD whom Chiarelli knows
