Very disappointed in the Flames players in Calgary fighting for a job. Only guy who showed any heart was Lomberg.

The Bennett line was real good in the second and third period. Bennett was the bets player all night. Tkachuk to me looked ok, I still don't think he makes the team. He is pretty raw, and needs some more time IMO. He played hard but didn't really show much skill tonight.

Bennett looked fantastic. Looks like he had a bit more speed from last year and you can tell he put on some muscle. Big things are coming for him soon enough. Just a matter of time with him.

Thought Brouwer was really good as well. I think him and Bennett will make a great pairing for the 2nd line. Compliment each other pretty well and they will get their points. Snake bitten tonight no question.

Tkachuk got better as the game went on. Give him the first few regular season games and go from there. I don't know if he'll stick long term, but he's close to being ready.

Thought shinkaruk was the best of the 2nd line. Chiasson was alright, but I just don't think i can see him as a top 6 guy like others do. Rather shinkaruk in that role. Will be an interesting battle through the rest of the preseason.

Loved Elliot's game. So calm and composed back there. He wil do wonders for this team. His gear looks so sharp too.

Good to hear Jankowski impressed in the other game. Didnt catch any of it, but that's encouraging for sure. How was ferland for those who watched? I'm hoping for a big camp from him, but haven't read anything good or bad about his game tonight.

My Co-Host Dan works with Beez and was telling me that he'll be giving him a hard time about that one.

Am I the only who sees the ice as bad as it is? Is the team not going to do anything about it? I counted about 8 times a player fell without anyone touching them. You could see the ruts from the second level with water pooling in them. Looks like they were playing on slurpee half way through the periods. Just an embarrassment.

I'm assuming this post is a joke. But if not, why in god's name would you be worried about a couple of split-squad preseason games?

Surprised at all the praise for Kylington, I thought he struggled.

If there's one guy who could use a solid pre season and start to the season it's Dougie Hamilton IMO.

Yeah IMO him and Brodie struggled the most. Engelland was by far the best D-man tonight. Gio played pretty solid too.

Oliver Kylington looked both good and bad IMO. He was very good on the PP and using his skating abilities to keep the puck in the zone. However, at times he seemed out of place and kept falling at the worst times. Another year in the AHL will be very good for him. I expect him to make a big push next season.

I thought Kylington was awful in the first period, except for one nice move around Yakcity. He was alright in the other two periods. Definitely can skate.
Brodie was pretty craptacular in the first too.
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna like Brouwer and Elliott, definitely will help. Im just worried about the defence now.

Posted this in the game thread as well.

Quick thoughts on the game at the dome just from what I remember, in no particular order.

Noticed much more puck pressure compared to last year, in both the D zone and the O zone. More pinching, and standing up at our blue line more. They played a diamond on the PK which is similar to last year and umbrella on the PP.

Overall was quite a sloppy game in the first which favoured the oilers and then as the play picked up the flames took over completely.

Gio - stud. The best player on the ice.

Brodie - looked rusty, timing was off, few bad giveaways. Not worried.

Engelland - solid. Took a hard shot off the hand at one point.

Wideman - has definitely lost a step, missed the net a few times, meh. Not impressed.

Kylington - very raw. Few bad pinches, looked a bit rushed with the puck. But oozes potential.

Brouwer - I was quite skeptical of this signing but he definitely started making me question that tonight. Big power winger that the flames were lacking. Stuck up for Bennett a few times. Won faceoffs. Smart and poised with the puck. Physical. Had a number of fantastic opportunities. His line dominated almost every shift.

Chiasson - good motor, looks big, plays with an edge. RH. Liked his game, wasn't too noticeable but solid.

Bennett - Snakebit. Looks confident. Made some fantastic passes for good chances. Really excited to see what he can do this year. Noticeably stronger and faster.

Tkachuk - had a few moments but looked lost. First few steps are quite slow especially with the puck and got separated from the puck quite easily. It was his first game of course. Mucked it up a few times. Got speared I guess which I missed but he tried to fight the guy. At one point Kassian was giving him a hard time lining up for a draw and Gio, Brouwer and Engelland all came over. Kassian got chirped hard next time he went by the flames bench.

Stajan - fine. He was Stajan.
Tuulola - looks and plays big. Soft hands on a few plays. Was noticeable in a good way.

Dube - mostly noticeable positively. Few giveaways. Fast and good hands.

Elliott - tracks puck very well. Calm and confident and made good saves all night. Puck handling was average at best. We got a goalie!

Macdonald - I'm sorry but he just does not look good in any way.

Klimchuk - was noticeable. In a bad way. Plays died on his stick, turned it over a lot, poor passes. I don't see him playing in the NHL.

Shinkaruk - played a pretty solid game, few good plays, more physical than I remembered.

Gaudreau - wasn't there

That's all I can think of ... just one preseason game of course!

I was at the game and thought he looked bad. Missed multiple checks, multiple missed assignments, and was soft along the boards. In addition, he did not create any offence. He looked worse in this game than any regular season game that I remember from the latter half of last season, so I'm writing this one off for him.

Poirier and Ferland were invisible.

Jankowski could play in the NHL right now, but I think 1 more year of strength building and top line assignments in the AHL is the way to go. He's a complete player that will be a beast if he gains more strength.

Pretty meh.

Took an over the glass penalty ten seconds into the game.

Scored a goal, but it was of the fluke variety.

Wasn't very noticeable at all outside of those two things. Although all of the B Team Flames looked bad so its kind of hard to single out which players are the cause and which ones are just getting drug down when that happens.

Jankowski looks like he has NHL level tools. He was about the only one that could hold any possession in the offensive one.

Gillies looked good at times and made some big saves, but also had a lot of issues with rebound control.

Good point. I did notice that he was missing all night, but didn't check to confirm.

Bennett needs to work on his faceoffs. It seemed like he lost a good chunk, or at the very least when I was watching for it.

Mcdonald looks like he is lacking confidence in the net. Lots of little movements in the crease. He needs to be echl bound so he can get a lot of work.

The pair from St Louis both looked good. Elliot has that calmness back there that this team has been missing since kipper left.

Not a whole lot of puck luck bur that is preseason for you.

I think the ice in the dome has been terrible since the floods. I remember they brought in the ice crew from the Olympic oval in the latter half of last season and it helped a bit but don't know if they're back. Don't expect it to get any better while they're lobbying for a new arena
