We actually did pretty good in the third jersey last year (IIRC). I know Johnny had hattricks against the Bruins and the Jets (both in December) wearing the alternate thirds.
Happy to see the retro's back though. Wonder if we'll see Elliott or Johnson with a retro mask and/or pads

Only if you become shockingly self aware afterwards and you make overly transparent attempts to make it look like we're all friends and this was all part of the plan.

Valuable air time my @$$, it was a segment of "overtime" which was essentially dead that night.
Calling the show is about fans voicing their opinions. That was my opinion and it was related to something else business related (I can't remember exactly what as this was some years back). I thought I would throw that in to the conversation as well but obviously real fans voicing their concerns is usually something the radio doesn't want to discuss.

Reminds me of last season, Hiller had a nice retro mask and matching pads ready to go but never go wear them as he didn't play on retro night lol.

Yep, happens all the time.
Of course it works the other way too. Sometimes you get to work with clients who are not only in tune, but also elevate your design work to new heights. But these people tend to be a much rarer commodity.
In general though you can pretty much tell the success of a project by having one conversation with the key individual on the client side. They are that important.

I actually like my Monahan handwritten 3rd jersey. Its the horsehead one I can't stand.

Horsehead wasn't all that bad. At least they were trying to be unique with the logo. Doesn't get much more generic than a wordmark above your already existing black C (an exact copy of the Sabres some years back, and even they dumped it). Flames should have known better.

Just repeating my broken record to make them the primaries. Flames seem to be setting themselves up to do so. If they're not making the retro style (89' or modernized version) primaries next season I will be disappointed.

I like the retros coming back. Although, I hope they'll keep the shoulder patch from the wordmark 3rds in some capacity. It's a nice secondary logo, just like the Stamps one (see avatar). I hope they're not going phase that one out.

I just find the current sets, the last third very underwhelming and with such a current pushing the retros I don't get it.
Especially with the league going retro everywhere. Edmonton, Vancouver, Islanders, Sabres, Flyers ... Hawks, Wings, Habs, Rangers refusing to change.
The Flames have a 1972 staple and they don't use it enough. They're classic!

The brutal thirds I can almost guarantee are a result of too many focus groups and a design by committee approach.

The process for changing unis is almost a couple years to jump through league hoops, and that after a design is agreed on here. Then the league asks for changes, so not a rubber stamp.
Retros are easier because these have been worn over the past few years as an alternate and don't need re-approval. But if the Flames wanted to do a white retro, that would be just as long a process as would a whole new redesign, when it comes to the league and the jersey manufacturer.
Black unfortunately has been used since the desperate Bremner redesign in 1995 and can't really see it going away. Hopefully just used on a third new jersey I'm a few years, but guessing it will still be part of the primaries, to better allow for wider range of options (again, league mandated) in other merchandise like hats and t shirts etc to be in black or have black in it.
Just a guess, but likely the plan a bunch of years ago (ie 2011-ish)was likely to have the next round of regular jerseys intoruduced with the new building, which a bunch of years ago, would've been in the next year or two if all the factors didn't change. So now the uniform plan is likely in limbo with a new building still years out, and instead go the Retros as a temporary thing and figure out what to do with design of all sets in the next couple years.

Nah I think they wanted strictly a red jersey for home games, but didn't want another secondary logo prominently on the front, so in order to look different from the regular set, pretty much limited to have to use something like a script of the city name and use one of the templates (Carolina?) and call it a day.
My guess is the next third jersey will be mainly all black and a fair bit different then anything else they have, or even had. Also, the World Cup experiment with designs for teams like Team NA will spawn a different era of design, certainly for alternates, around the league.

My ideal scenario is Retro home and away and the '04 homes as the third.

For what it's worth, the wordmark jerseys look better on TV.
Almost everything about the current home/away set is tacky. People have been calling the thirds Walmart, but nothing is more Walmart than the random decision to have provincial and national flags as shoulder patches.
