It goes without saying that a contract extension would have to be negotiated prior to a trade being completed for that price.

Chances are, the Flames looked at the asset cost (6OA) and the dollar cost and decided that Elliott was the better play.

They were right.

Couldnt agree more.

When you line up all the pieces, I'd have done it this way too.

Probably the same picks for Elliot plus one plus either the FLA or DAL 2nd rounder

I don't think he is worth 6th overall either. I doubt treliving's would have done that. But not sure Yzerman would part with bishop for just a 2nd, 3rd, and another 2nd (i think that is what you meant). Makes me think a decent player (kylington type level) would have been involved.

Flames really don't owe Elliott anything. They could easily sign Bishop next year as a UFA if they want and their acquisition cost is nil. At that point, even if Elliott has a decent year, you do it if you can because Bishop is a top 3 goalie in the league, Vezina calibre, has had a large workload and had deep playoff runs. Pretty simple really.

“It was up to me. They were on my no-trade [list] or whatever, so that kinda has to get worked out. It was one of those things where at the draft it could’ve happened," Bishop told Sportsnet last week in Columbus. "Obviously, it's not that close if it didn’t."

A two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who also ranked 10th in Hart Trophy voting last season, Bishop is entering the final season of his contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. At a $5.95-million salary cap hit, the franchise netminder is in line for a raise. The goalie's representatives tried to work out a contract extension with Calgary, he had said, but the Flames changed course and traded a second-round pick for the older (31) and cheaper ($2.5 million) Brian Elliott, whose contract also expires in 2017.
