Moved out at 19 to a one-bedroom in the Marda Loop area (pre-gentrification). I suppose I had a damage deposit and first month's rent. So about $900?

Ideally, a house. Lived in Connaught (Beltline) in an old circa 1910 two-story place with some buddies in my 20s. Everyone worked within a five block radius. Had other friends with places in the neighbourhood. Didn't need a car. 17th ave was just picking up steam. It was a never-ending party. BBQs. Kitchen parties. Expeditions to the Ship when we were flush. Never even had to call anybody, you'd just come home from work and people would be hanging out on the porch and hand you a beer.
Like troutman, I didn't buy until I was 32 and married. No regrets.

I didn't buy until I was 37. Had to pay off those student loans first.
I grew up in a rented apartment as well and 37 was when I first lived in a house. I felt like I was moving into a mansion.

Nah, nothing to do with religion.
As I said, it's just a different culture and upbringing. To be honest, I couldn't fathom being royally kicked out of the house at 18. Living at home through university was great in my opinion and the majority of my closest (white/Canadian) friends were the same. About half of my friends around the same age still live at home too.

I have seen those who aren't religious do the same though. It's more cultural than religious I think.
For me, I stayed at home paying rent for about a year and a half after graduation. I think it was 11 or 12% I put into a <$200k fixer condo around the belt line. I had a car that was paid off too, but technically I bought my parents car that they had no use for, so that doesn't really count. I purchased about $1000 in household things and had a laptop computer I purchased with scholarship money.

When I first moved out I was 19 years old and making $9.27/hr. I had no savings, an almost 3 grand debt to pay (caught driving with no insurance) and a silly drug habit. I found a way to make it work. All the money I had when I left was the change in my pockets.

I had money, but right before I moved out I bought a Camaro IROC with a T roof, and then moved out. I did it wrong. Was fun though. I was 18 and stupid.

Definitely a sea change in attitudes around adults living at home. Part of it is economics. My sense is there's also a change in priorities. I get the impression that independence isn't valued as highly by young adults as it used to be. And presumably it's more comfortable for young adults to live at home now. Maybe it's okay to bring a hookup home at 2 am? I don't know.
It is interesting that young women today tend to move out of home much younger than young men.

I had a month of rent and a damage deposit saved up when I first moved out. I'll echo the comments - living with a buddy in the Beltline in my early to mid 20s was a fantastic experience and I'd recommend it for sure.
I think it's a good time to buy in Calgary, but I'd recommend not putting all of your savings into a down-payment. It doesn't make sense to put a huge amount of your wealth into a highly levered illiquid investment that essentially hinges on the performance of the Calgary economy. Don't overextend yourself, go with a lower percentage down-payment (financing is cheap), and put the rest into RRSP/TFSA.

I know it was a different time back in the day but you don't see the progression up the property ladder like you used to.
Rent a tiny apartment>Rent Bigger>Condo>Starter house/bigger condo/townhouse/house
A lot of lessons and experiences were gained along the way.

Public toilets, Fish Creek park, Sikome lake, etc.
Haha but really, she's got more privacy at her house so we make do.
And of course:

You shouldn't have to "make do" with sex until you are married with kids.

The week after my last college exam, I packed up my car and left to work in Calgary. I had $500 to my name and $1000 in debt thanks to car repairs. Lived with 4 other guys in a slightly run down place in Huntington Hills for a couple years before moving to something nicer. It was a good learning experience after living at home all my life before then.
That was in 2005, and I'm still renting today. I'll buy a house someday, but I'm not in a huge rush.
