Boom: Elliott. Plays 55+ games and anchors a much improved defence. Gulutzan speaks of 5 man units, but Elliot is the rock that inspires confidence and stronger play. Also exhibits the weird goalie mojo this team hasn't seen since Kipper.
Bust: Ferland and/or Chiasson. Hope I am wrong, but perhaps neither is any good, exposing the obvious weakness this team has on the wing. Tantalizing potential and talent, but without any meaningful production. Jones 2.0 (sorry, Scorpion).

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Boom: Gaudreau (Top 3), Tkachuk (contends for Calder), Backlund (Has entered his prime. Breaks out)

Bust: Ferland (Loses spot), Bennett (Bust is harsh, but doesn't see much progress)

Sorry about the Bennett prediction. Just a gut feeling that we'll see the same inconsistency issues plague him as last season. I really, really, really, hope I'm wrong.

Boom: Bennet takes over #2 Center spot, despite backlund continuing to have a strong showing.

Bust:Bouma, on the farm: Poirier/Klimchuck one or both don't have much of a bounce back.

Boom: Brodie and Bennett
Bust: Bouma, and one or two of Shinkaruk, Chiasson or Ferland. This depends on which of these players solidifies a place in the middle six.

I think this assertion is unbelievably off-the-charts exaggerated and misleading, and it raises the question for Elliot about what reasonable expectations are for him this season. So, what do you think is reasonable? For me personally, I don't see any reason to think that he won't maintain a +0.915 SP—something he has managed to do in four of his last five seasons.

I honestly think that most fans will be happy so long as he looks better than average on a nightly basis, which amounts to a colossal improvement on the goaltending from last year.

Boom:

1. Bennett - Takes another step, 25+ goal / 50+ point season in a 2A/B role with Backlund
2. Hamilton - 50+ point season playing 22+ minutes per night
3. Ferland - Not snake bitten anymore, he adds some offense to go with his solid defensive/physical game, 30+ points and 10+ goals

HM - Tkachuk - makes the team and has a solid rookie season putting up 30-35 points

Not predicting any busts.

why not?

better than being cynically pessimistic. it's not as though Ryan Howse is one of our top prospects.

Almost certainly he will be considered a bust as the expectations set for him are unbelievably off the charts high.

----

The Flames are not going to have 3 D-men with over 40 pts and 3 in the top 22 scoring d-men.

The boom level for Hamilton should be 30 pts and plus 10.... Turning his +/- around by 25 really turns the Flames back into a playoff contender.
If Hamilton is the PP QB next year, there is no way 30 points will happen IMO, unless he's injured. I agree that a more defensive approach might hurt our D's offensive totals but I don't think it will be nearly to the tune you are suggesting. I think Gio, Hamilton and Brodie are all at least 40 point guys in any system where they are the top 3 guys.

Boom:
Shinkaruk hits 20 goals.

Bust(s):
Gulutzan is in way over his head and the team flounders. Hartley still gets blamed, but GG proves to be a terrible hire.

Giordano continues to be a penalty machine, the PK doesn't improve at all.

Posters see what they want to see, but in this instance I see few if any respondents predicting that every prospect will work out.

Who said that? In the thread I'm reading, it seems most posters are picking a select few to boom or bust.... or am I missing something? Did you only read GranteedEV's post and not realize it was a joke? There will be a few surprises this year, there always is. I don't think anyone is going all Oprah here, dolling out career years for everyone.

Always interesting when a pessimist who sees himself as a realist calls out optimists.

I don't really get the Bennett bust picks.

I think I'm pretty pessimistic, but the kid was unlucky not to have 10+ more points this past season. Short of a 10-15 game stretch in the middle of the season, he was always noticeable for good reasons.

I'm more fascinated by the pessimistic optimists
Those that are saying a player should do better than they have been historically but predicting they won't, and therefore are disappointments

Booms: Elliott will prove he is a legit top 10 goalie in the league. Bennett will score 25 goals and get 55 points and all Flames will be drooling over the future. Hamilton will get 15 goals and 50 points and we will be talking about him as our best dman moving forward

Busts: Brouwer will be a bust year 1 only. Seems to be a trend going to a new team on a big deal. Giordano will be surpassed by Brodie and Hamilton and will get around 40 points and we will be questioning a potential decline. He will still be very valuable but his contract will start to look concerning by years end

The only prospects I see any predictions of busting are the ones who already have. That's all I'm saying.

Gonna be bold and different:

Boom: Backlund (30 goal "career" year), Shinkaruk (20+ goals), Wideman (people get confused feelings after he gets 50 points)

Bust: Giordano (35-40 points), Chiasson (musical chairs with press box), Brouwer (ends up on third line).
