i don't believe so. from my understanding the 'old rings' that are removed are at the hockey hall of fame

one thing i did notice is that on the angled part of the cup, right above the top ring, they engrave just the name and year of the cup winning team from the removed rings

I always imagine some grizzled old man at some hole in the wall engraving place getting this thing dropped in his lap on occasion.

"Goddammit! Not the goddamned Stanley Cup again! I hate this damned thing! Everything is so small!"

As a fan I would have no qualms touching the cup if the opportunity presented itself. As a player, I might avoid touching it; not because of any sense of superstition, but because it is a representation of the pinnacle of all of hockey and I would want to keep that moment 'special' and not ruin my cup virginity beforehand.

Guys, I was obviously joking. Was the all caps not a dead giveaway? In case it wasn't, perhaps the following, two posts later, might have been a clue?

Come the #### on. ==

I think it's equally hilarious when people get REALLY MAD about someone getting to visit the dressing room and stepping on the logo. Why the hell did you put a gigantic team logo in the middle of the damned carpet, then?! Rope it off if you're so concerned.
