I dont think he makes the team past 9 games and rightfully so. The kid will be great, but not this season.

Are you willing to make a wager on this?

I just rewatched AC's Bennett highlights. Those two seem like a dream fit for each other -- crash and bang around the net with very high hockey IQ. I think they'll be a nightmare for the opposition for the next decade.

Sweet.

my kid was asking me about his chances of making the team.

really hard to say, but given his talent and draft position there are some assumptions.

1) He gets the call to main camp after Penticton (first cut)
2) He gets in an ex game (more specifically I would bet he plays in that Cgy/Edm split squad game opener on the Saddledome roster)
3) Even if he stinks it up he'll get a 2nd game as a 6th overall pick

But that's it. That's as far as name/draft position buys him, the rest is up to him. I think he has to look good, but also produce at least marginally. He does that and he likely plays the team's last ex. game.

Agree 100%.

And I think he will earn more. I predict he gets better as camp goes along. He earns the chance at 9 games. He continues to improve over those 9 games, and he gives BT no choice but to keep him.

By the 9 game mark, he and Bennett are an established pair. They become the shiny new toy and poor Gaudreau is left alone in the corner to count his $50M.

On these points, does anyone recall how Monahan performed in his rookie exhibition season?

IIRC, he was good, but hadn't really won a spot. Before the season started, the majority of fans thought he should go back to junior after 9 games.

Then he scored something like 7 goals in those 9 games and the team had no choice but to keep him.

Yeah we really lucked out on having those 2 (and Monahan) drop a couple spots so we could draft them.

Bennett and Tkachuk are going to be in McDavid's face for the next 10 years and i love it

I think he makes the team and rightfully so. The Flames had 2 major needs coming into the offseason. They needed goaltending and they needed scoring wingers with size. The Elliot-Johnson tandem should be a clear upgrade on the 3 headed $9M monster we had last year. Size on the wing was addressed with Brouwer but they need more than that. I feel Tkachuk who had 107 regular season and 40 playoff points is pretty close to ready. At 6'2 205 he is more filled out than either Monahan or Bennett at the same age. Most importantly the kid seems highly motivated and truly understands how hard he has to work to get to the show next season.

If he looks lost in the preseason or 9 game tryout then he will be sent back but I would wager he is focused and ready to make an impact come September.

My season expectations for him would be in the 15-20 goal and 30-40pt range

I remember great hand wringing that Monahan would somehow ruin the Flames chances at a high draft pick if he stayed up. The internet is weird.

Here's what Monahan did during his first 9 regular season games:

Game 1. 11:40 of icetime, 1 assist
Game 2. 13:20, 1 goal
Game 3. 13:42, 1 goal
Game 4. 15:41, 1 goal + 1 assist
Game 5. 16:31, 1 goal
Game 6. 15:18
Game 7. 15:10, 1 goal + 1 assist
Game 8. 21:11, 1 goal
Game 9. 19:26

Incredible. One of the most under rated young players in the game at this point IMO. Those first 9 games just outline a small sample size of what Sean has done consistently in his first 3 seasons. Excited to see him push for 70+ next year which I 100 % think he can do.

I think he's an even better bet than Monahan and Bennett were to make the team for the following reasons.

1 - he plays wing which is the easiest position to break in as a young player because the defensive responsibilities are easier and less critical
2 - he has NHL size/strength
3 - he plays a very pro style where he relishes going to the hard areas where goals are scored
4 - he might be the 2nd most skilled winger in training camp

I think he's the most NHL ready prospect we've drafted since I've been watching (~20 years now). Craig Button seemed to think he's NHL ready too.

His age/experience works in his favor too. Little older in his draft year, will turn 19 in December.

That's good though I was hoping for another 18-year-old-Matthew-Tkachuk when we go deep this year.
