What a wonderful day for the Lightning though. Their biggest divisional rival just made a puzzling trade, and in re-signing Stamkos they blocked 2 other division rivals from getting better. Lightning are gonna own that division for years to come.

Now that Stamkos is staying put, it'll be really interesting to see what moves Tampa makes over the next 12 months or so. They have Bishop to possibly move out, Kucherov and Killorn to sign as RFAs in the next few weeks. In 12 months time, they have Hedman, Johnson, Palat and Drouin to sign as RFAs, Bishop as a UFA.
But they've got anchor's like Matt Carle on the team for 2 more years, plus Callahan's contract might look very similar to Dustin Brown's in a year or 2. They are going to have to make some very tough decisions in the next year or so.

A day that will go down in Canadian hockey infamy.
A long long time ago
I can still remember how
That music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
Something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
So
Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
McKenzie, on theory this is a sign-and-trade: "No, my understanding is Steven Stamkos has made a decision to return to the #TBLightning."

Very high skill level but not durable enough for his playstyle. This contract may sting sooner as opposed to later.

Again with these injury slights. He's had 1 broken leg and 1 blood clot in 8 seasons in the league. Thats hardly a record that makes me worried he'll miss loads of games in the future.

Can't blame the guy. Tax-free pay, great weather, golf whenever, beach whenever. Nobody in town knows who you are. What a life.

Well, just means the incessant Stamkos signing with Leafs can finally be put to bed....
Just in time for the incessant Tavares signing with the Leafs after next season to start. Yay!

Yeah once you know the terms and tax rates a sign-and-trade doesnt make sense anymore. He'd have wanted 7x$12 or so from Toronto to wind up with the same amount of money.

Personally I feel the Leafs dodged a bullet considering the contract it was going to take to sign Stamkos. He's a really good player but you have to wonder if his best days are already behind him. As well I've always considered him a great shooter of the puck but I don't know if he's one of those guys that elevates his linemates.

It's not an injury slight, it's a risk comment. I didn't criticize his injuries did I?

The tax advantage only occurs if Tampa actually offers him market value. At last report they offered him 8.5 million. Not even close enough.

It's funny how people will tell me it's delusional of Leaf fans to think Stamkos wants to play for his hometown team and then cite Winnipeg as a preferred destination. Who's delusional exactly?
