We are all having serious shiny toy syndrome right now, lol. It reminds me of my kids ripping into presents on Christmas morning, getting excited for a brief moment then Tossing it aside to open another gift.

I dont think the drop from 6 to 10 is very smart. Especially if we do it before the draft. Who knows who slips to 6? Dubois or Tkachuk could be there.
I just dont want to be sitting here in 5 years and hearing Conroy on the fan 960 talking about player X we missed out on at 6 - who we would have taken - and was at the top of our list - but we traded down to get Varlamov and thats how all-star player X ended up on the Avalanche.
Remember how crybaby fans were because we missed out on Maata and Teraveinen when we traded down for Janko? What if a player selected between 6-9, who we would have taken - ends up becoming a world beater. I'd cry.

Drop downs in the first round don't usually occur until the pick is on the clock.
Missing out on Maatta and Teravaninen is a completely different scenario to someone surprising being at 6. Flames management wanted no else but Jankowski, and were even willing to take him without trading down (if you believe what they were saying that day)

Don't know why, but I've never been a huge fan of Varlamov. I'd prefer MAF or Bishop if we're going down the trade route, though Varlamov may be easiest to acquire.

True. I was more comparing the "oh gosh we could have had player X, what were we thinking". I really hope we dont move down. If we do...we HAVE to get Keller.

Lavoie always has solid info. He broke the exact details the NHL announced for expansion about a week early.
Which only means they are exploring all options, which we knew already.

If Ortio starts the season Treliving gets canned. What a mess. We're at the pinnacle of buying high, couldn't be any more desperate. We don't even have a goalie good enough for backup.

5.9 cap hit for the next 3 years.
He doesn't come cheap.

I watched 20 or 30 Avalanche games last year. Varlamov's body of work was good. However as some pointed out earlier he is streaky. When his confidence is high he can be amazing. That said when his confidence is bad he can look like Hiller last year. I reckon he would be a good pick up for the right price. He has potential to steal games, and at 27 he might have better longevity than some others. I would go for it with hopes Ortio can pull some shifts.

I'm a pretty big fan of Varlamov.
He'd be my 1st choice of the realistic options discussed to date.

I'd love to get Varlamov, he's the best option if he is available
He's been an above average to great goalie in Colorado, I'd like to see what he can do with a real defense in front of him
6 + a 2nd for 10 + Varlamov would be a very good trade IMO

What are you talking about? We are the only team looking for a #1 goalie and we have multiple options. We are the opposite of desperate, we are in the driver's seat.

The only way that the Varlamov trade would interest me is at the draft, after the Puljujarvi window closed.
If we can't trade up, trading down to acquire him would be a fine plan B, depending on what the add is - and there would be an add.

I don't think there's any coincidence that the Bishop & Varlamov rumours have popped up just after Rutherford's supposed demand for 6th overall in return for Fleury.
Yes, Treliving is probably looking at other options, but it's also going to make Rutherford a bit itchy that he could miss out on potentially his best opportunity to get a decent return for MAF before the expansion next year.

For some reason I doubt that a swapping of firsts is in play here. A colborne + late second + wideman for varlamov + equivalent cap dump expiring this year would be my best guess.
I don't see why varlamov would be enticing enough to drop a teir in the draft. He's not that much better than Anderson.

Thing is the Flames don't think they're dropping a tier. Many times they've said they're comfortable with about 6-8 players.
