Bad news for anyone looking to trade for Shattenkirk *cough* Oilers *cough*.

Gotta think Shattenkirk will look for a similar deal when his contract is up at end of season.

Why do NHL teams continue to sign ridiculous contracts. Were there even negotiations or did a 5 year old with a crayon write it up in a day?

NHL lockout in 5..4...3..2.

had a look at some hero charts on Yandle, thinking that the money ball group running the Panthers must see something I don't.

He doesn't hold a candle to Giordano, but is a virtual clone in advanced stats to Dougie Hamilton ... difference being Hamilton's upside, slightly cheaper, etc.

Offensively Yandle's a play driver, but his suppression numbers don't look very good at all.

Wow did not expect Yandle to get a deal like this. They have a lot of free agents on the back end next year so maybe this is just a plan to hedge against that.

Yup. Brian Campbell 2.0.

This is why we have lockouts and strikes. It's simply impossible to get 30 teams on the same page. Likely 28 teams would consider paying Yandle that kind of money for that term simply bad for business but it only takes one team and now agents are going to run with this contract as some standard.

The thing with his advanced stats from a Corsi perspective is that they still don't tell the whole story.

The guy starts 67% of his shifts in the offensive zone - that is crazy for a defenseman.

Can put up points, and is strong offensively, but has to really be sheltered defensively.

I really liked the Goligoski deal and expected this to be the same. Nope, 2 years and ~1 million too much, plus they gave up two picks to do it

Don't be surprised when this CBA is done the NHL tries to limit contract length to 5 years. They should have done that last time around.

Seems like Wideman would be a fantastic replacement for Yandle on the Rangers.

Did Dale Talon forget that the UFA period doesn't start until July 1st? I get that he gave up assets and was looking to sign him earlier. But good lord. I get that Yandle is a great offensive D. But does he ever play on the top pairing? Can he be used in a shut down role or on the PK? I don't watch him enough to really have an opinion on that. But now he's getting paid #1D money so the team had better hope he can play those roles.

Then again, last time Talon signed a D to a horrible contract like that (Campbell) the Hawks won the cup. So who knows, it very well might pan out.

His best season was 6 years ago (though he has consistently put up good numbers).

However, I strongly disagree with him being able to handle a more significant role.

Oh, and the points he got at 23 is no reflection of what we can expect at 35-37.

This is a terrible contract. And Shattenkirk's agent is the happiest camper in hockeyland right now.

And the NHLPA will fight it tooth and nail and I think the PA wins that fight.

The NHL dug their bed...

Bad contracts have nothing to do with the CBA.

The CBA defines the size of the pie (how much money goes to players in total).

How it gets divided up is up is up to the players and teams.

Large contracts hurt the team that signs them. And it hurts all the other players in the league that already have a contract (if total spending exceeds the HRR, which it usually does)

The last lockout was about revenue splitting. The NHL players were getting 57% of the revenue to the NHL's 43%. They agreed to 50-50%. When you're looking at $4B in revenue a year, that 7% is worth over $250,000,000.00 to the NHL each year.

There's a soft limit to the amount NHL teams can spend on salary. The NHL doesn't care if Florida is spending 6.35M on Yandle and 0.800 on some scrub, or two players at 3.5M. Through escrow, the NHL players are going to make 50% of the revenue at the end of the day. Poor contracts hurt the individual teams far more than the NHL (of course healthy teams help the league).
