Anne and Tanya somehow got horribly lost twice. They were so late to the gondola, that they arrived after all the teams on the second flight to Edmonton (they don't ever say how far behind the second flight was from the first).
If things were that bad for them in Jasper, I fully expect to see them driving around Okotoks next week while all the other teams are in downtown Calgary. Actually, the way they were going, I wouldn't be surprised to see them somehow end up in Golden before they realize they took a wrong turn.
The editing of the Gondola challenge really confused me when I watched it the first time, so I went back to watch it again. For some reason, they never showed Anne's first attempt (which was obviously a failure). This is what confused me when watching it.
5th Gondola: Amy 2, Yvette 2, Lowell 2 -- Cancelled partway up the mountain
After Stephane completes his second attempt, you can see Tanya in the other gondola with Antoine, so Anne must have made some attempt, but they didn't show it. Knowing that, it makes more sense how the challenge played out. The second attempt had the racer's weight supported, so it should have been relatively easy to complete without a second failure. The length of time they made the teams wait would also have been easy to calculate based on how long the other teams took on their second attempt. Anne & Tanya had to wait longer because they would have had to wait for the first group to finish their second attempts before Anne could do hers.

I couldn't really tell how long teams were looking for the clues with the beacons. But finding things with a Tracker2 is ridiculously easy. It seemed like some were stuck there for a while which is sad.
So how far was Brandon behind Kelly when he took the penalty?
They were one full round trip of the gondola behind when they left. So, if it was a full hour per trip, they were well behind.
If each trip was 1 hour, taking the penalty wasn't actually a bad plan for the girls, but it was a horrible idea for the guys. If you're going to decide to take a penalty, you really need to convince another team (preferably one you're confident you can beat in a foot race) to do it as well in case you misjudged the time it would take.
Anthony and Brandon should have convinced Anne & Tanya that they were so far back, it would take them forever to catch up so they should take the penalty to risk it. If they had done that, they'd still be racing.

I only got to see half the show on Tuesday, so I re-watched it this weekend. My understanding is that the second time on the tram task your weight was supported, so everyone should have been able to make it on their second try, as long as they didn't freak out somehow. Once it was cancelled, they made each team wait as long as the "crossing" would take. In other words, they weren't expecting teams to take more than two tries unless they were really bad.
If my understanding is correct, it was an even worse move for the guys to take the penalty. They had already made one attempt, so the next attempt would have been easier and they had already wasted too much time at the task to THEN start a penalty. A better choice would be if you were not in the first group to watch the task, decide it was too difficult, and get out of there immediately. And yes, convincing a team behind you to take a penalty as well would have been good insurance.
There was a huge advantage for completing the gondola challenge on the first try.
I don't really like non-elimination legs this early in the race. Since there's fewer teams, I wonder if we'll see more non-elimination legs, or if there will just be fewer episodes?
Off to 'Nam next week.

why would Jillian freak out and not do the express pass challenge? The two teams made a deal then just work together and get the pass and they're set. How did Stephane and Antoine fall behind so much after the rappelling task, they came from the first bus.
What happens if had been 4 teams at the record store and 1 team finds the express pass. The task ends and everyone leaves together?

The other day I was thinking about that Gondola challenge. If people weren't aided the second attempt (apparently they were?), how long would it have taken to have all of the teams finish? The tramway website says that a car leaves every nine minutes, but they were only using one car for the event. Between getting people ready, actual attempts, and raising (lowering?) failed attempts, it's hard to imagine groups of three attempts happening less than an hour apart. So if you failed on your first attempt, it might have been 3 hours before trying for a second time. With likely oncoming darkness, and mountain weather, the producers had to know that there was pretty much Zero chance of all the teams finishing that roadblock, right?
Taking the penalty of 4 hours was probably a smart move, until the producers gave all of the teams who didn't take a penalty a big break, because I have no idea how it should have been possible for all the groups to complete the roadblock in four hours.

If 4 teams tried for the express pass, the first team that finds it gets it, and the rest of the teams get nothing.
I'm not convinced that Steph & Kristen will not give the express pass to Jilian & Emmit. They didn't seem too annoyed at them bailing on it.
I can see them trying to take out Jilian and Emmit on the international legs, they'd be stupid to give the strongest team a free pass.
I'd prefer if they saved the Non-Elimination legs for later on in the season, saving a weak team this early will just spell the end for them usually the following episode.
I think Jillian and Emmett are likely to blow up at some point in the race enough to knock them out.
Steph and Kristen are strong, too. I like the blind guy and his wife from Lethbridge, but I just can't see them being fast enough due to his disability.
The two divorced moms are no good, the asian girls stink, the indian chicks are awful. Maybe the crazy hair and tattooed ladies....
