I'm actually surprised to see how many non NHLers are on some of these teams.

I think Hamilton has/had a higher chance of making the team than Gio or Brodie.
Not only should Hamilton make the team, but he'd be one of the best D there. Gio has a lot more competition.

For sure, adds some luster. Hopefully the next one has even more. Like does Russia really not have any defense in the KHL that would be better?

Cheering for U-23's cause A) they'll be exciting and B) this tournament is a stupid joke and having one of the stupid joke teams win would be great.
Actually I'm cheering for the Rest of Europe to U-23's in the final. That would be the dream.

That is possible. Hard for the Canada crew to turn their back on guy that plays as well in both ends as Giordano.

Have to think Burns and Letang have made a strong claim.
I think Brodie sneaks in at #7

Yup, same old story I guess. Kind of bad timing for Team Finland though. A lot of our top talent is really young right now. Only one d-man over 24. Barkov, Laine, Puljujärvi could be a really dangerous top line... In 2018.
Well, they have goaltending and they always work hard. With that you always have a chance. And there's some good players. Short tournament, you never know. Okay Canada will win, but beyond that

I had no idea Burke and BT were putting all the teams together for this tournament.

In every other sport, it would just be Canada vs USA, yet in hockey it's obligatory to add TEAM. It actually annoys me.

It annoys me too but I find it more of Canadian thing than a hockey thing.

Voynov might be considered voluntarily deported by American authorities, but this entire tournament is being played in Toronto. Not sure if Canadian authorities would deny him a visa or not.

Disappointed backs didn't make the swede team. Would have really like to see him play in a tournament like this. Played well I thought in the world championships and this would've been a step up for him and would've liked to seen how he fared. Solid swede team though so I can understand.

Yah that was my thinking.
Russian boycott?
That would be entertaining.

More evidence that this is a farce. NHL overriding roster decisions. Some world cup.

But it's an NHL event, hosted by the NHL. It's their business.
If he can't play in the NHL, would would he be allowed to play in this tournament?

Burke on 960 says it is not 100% certain that Kevin (recovering from hip surgery) will be ready for this tournament.

They shouldn't call it a world cup. None of the teams can ice their best roster.
It's more like an NHL invitational.

Calgary Flames defenceman Jakub Nakladal didn’t expect a call from Czech Republic general manager Martin Rucinsky.
He gladly accepted one, though.
And he’ll answer the call for his country at the World Cup of Hockey in September.
“I was surprised because I didn’t expect it,” Nakladal said. “I think we have a couple good defencemen in the NHL and in Europe. I knew that the first four defencemen that were there. There were just three spots. I didn’t expect it. The manager called me and told me I’d be there. I was so happy because I think for me it’s almost like the Olympic Games. There will be the best players in the world. Everybody will be there.
“I’m really looking forward to the tournament.”
|
Quote:
His international resume has him at ease in the best-on-best format.
“I know what it’s like to play on the National team,” said Nakladal, who has resumed skating and declared himself 100 percent recovered. “It’s absolutely different than playing in a normal season on a club team. It doesn’t matter if it’s in Europe or the NHL … it’s always different to play on the national team. I think it’ll be okay. I was in three World Championships. I don’t feel any pressure. I just want to enjoy the tournament because it will be absolutely the best players in the world. I just want to enjoy it and help earn good results.”
|
Quote:
Nakladal has no hesitation in facing fellow Flames.
Not in the name of his country.
“It’s always fun to play teammates,” he said. “Sometimes you can talk to each other during the games. It’s funny. I think it’s nothing special when I’m going to be on the ice. I just have to focus for the game and don’t think about anything about my teammates from Calgary right now, or anything like that.
"You have to focus on the game and play for your team.”
