Article quoted by Sureloss on the other board

“I’m not rushing it because I want to hit a certain date,” he said. “There’s no time pressure, but having said that, you don’t want to wait until September either.”
So when can Calgary expect to have a new coach? It won’t be today, laughed Treliving. And it won’t be the day before training camp opens.
“It’s going to be sometime between then,” he said. “I haven’t set a mile marker, but you’d obviously like it done soon, because there are other things you have to do.”

This is the only thing I've heard in terms of a time frame. Some of the "insiders" have also claimed that the Flames are taking their time on this one. But it's probably only relative in comparison to Ottawa and Minnesota. Even though he hasn't set a pre-draft deadline, I bet they do make the hire before the draft. It's very unusual for coaching selections to take place beyond that.

He was asked about it and the vague Trelivingism was "sometime in between now and training camp". But he did mention that he had other things to do (RFAs, draft, free agency) so I imagine he's going to want his new coach in place by then.

In an interview posted by surely in the other thread, he said sometime between now and training camp, but then qualified that by saying it would better to have a new coach in place sooner than later.

I wonder how much money it would take to persuade Scotty B out of management and back into coaching?

I want the Flames to do their due diligence like everyone else. But its also not as if BT and Burke haven't been thinking about candidates for a while. I am sure it has been on both of their minds since Day 1 on the job.

This isn't like most jobs where you aren't familiar with the candidates until they walk into your office for an interview. Without a doubt, they already have a short list and probably some favorites and inclinations built in. For this type of job, I'm not convinced it comes down to how they interviewed. Their reputation, track record and previous exposure to our decision makers have got to be the primary factors.

I don't think this drags on for that long.

No thanks.

Scotty Bowman is 82-years-old, and hasn't coached in over a decade. Do you remember how it went for Pat Quinn when he was coaxed from retirement back into coaching?

I would guess Anaheim would go internal meaning the Flames can really take their sweet time.

Having said that I'm sure they have a list that is pretty tight for head coach, but are talking to many to build one of those super staffs for one splashy unveiling.

I certainly don't see the need to have a coach in place for the draft, that's always seemed odd to me.

Would be nice to have the staff in place for the prospects camp in July, but not imperative. Gelinas and Conroy could easily run it.

Man I love Conny.

The kids probably give an extra 10 percent during prospects camp with Conny running it haha

Damn. Wanted to select Dineen and hit Muller by mistake.

It would be nice, though, because we could start teaching the new defensive and offensive systems right away.

I don't get some people. If Hartley was such a great coach, why were/are there no rumors of him being interviewed for Ottawa/Minnesota/Anaheim jobs. You'd think a team like Habs would fire Therrien and hire him? Not a peep about that. Even the likes of Carlyle/Yeo are being interviewed.

Burke was interviewed a while ago and commented on his own personal interview process and how when he searched for the Calgary GM role, he only interviewed Treliving when asked how many candidates he had in mind. He alluded to having a very small group of candidates typically when he was looking to hire due to conversations he's having every day with people in the business.

Pretty different approach from Treliving if Burke was being honest and rumours of Treliving casting a wide net are true.

Treliving is probably also checking out availability of potential assistant coaches to fill out the coaching staff.

Just a gut feeling, but I believe the next coach of this team is currently still coaching in the playoffs. I would lean towards Muller but it could be Boughner or Tocchet or even a guy like Steve Thomas as well.

By the sounds of it the year end interviews with the players didn't reflect on Hartley well at all. If true, and the environment was starting to become toxic, BT didn't drop the ball at all.

Yup.

Treliving has never hired a head coach and he is now in his 3rd season as an NHL GM. There was always going to be a time when this came to a head. With a very bad season in the rear view mirror and an (at times) unwatchable team, it was pretty clear changes were going to occur sooner or later. BT just chose to do it sooner which makes all the sense in the world. It allows him all the time he wants to find the replacement, it allows Hartley 4 months to secure a new job somewhere, and it allows CP to get a zillion more hits before a decision is announced.

All part of the normal cycle of life in the NHL.

I wonder if Kelly McCrimmon has any interest in leaving Brandon? He's been there forever.

The Leafs reportedly offered him a management position last year, but he turned them down to stay with the Wheat Kings. They finally won the WHL Championship this year. Perhaps if they win the Memorial Cup, he'll decide it's time to move on.

He also owns and GM's the Wheaties....i really think he is pretty comfortable doing what he's doing. Though you never know if the allure of trying to coach in the best league in the world (nevermind the $$ he would be guaranteed as well) isn't enough to entice him.

Interesting name though.
